Digital marketing consulting.
Digital marketing consulting here means strategy and priorities first, delivery second. We work out which channels pay off for you, where your funnel leaks and what you will measure success against — before you spend the budget.
Book a free first callMost companies do not have a marketing problem. They have a priorities problem. Several channels run at once — a bit of social media, some SEO, the occasional ad campaign — none of them properly, and nobody can say which one actually brings customers. That is where consulting starts: not doing more, but doing the right thing first.
We have advised Swiss SMEs, practices and startups from Zollikon near Zurich since 2022, across more than 300 projects. We are deliberately not the agency that "does everything": the consulting settles strategy, funnel, measurement and sequence. Whether you then implement it yourself, brief your own team or hand it to us is your decision — and we recommend honestly, even when the honest answer argues against giving us the delivery work.
What honest digital marketing consulting actually delivers
Good consulting gives you a decision, not buzzwords: what you do first, what comes later, what you leave alone. It sorts your marketing along four questions — and answers them with your numbers, not with generic best practice.
- Where do you stand? An honest inventory of website, channels, visibility and competition, without the usual scare-report theatre.
- Who are your customers and how do they search? Which questions they ask, on which platforms, at which point in the decision.
- Which channels are worth it for you? Not all of them — the two or three that fit your offer, your margin and your catchment area.
- What will you measure success against? Concrete metrics and clean tracking, so you can see what works instead of guessing.
The output is a short, prioritised roadmap you can act on with or without us. If you want to move straight into delivery, that is what our digital agency in Zurich is for.
Channels, funnel, measurement — what actually decides the outcome
Digital marketing succeeds less on individual channels than on three layers working together: the right channels, a funnel that converts and measurement you can trust. Take one away and the rest goes to waste.
Channels. SEO, Google Ads, social media, email, content — each has its own strength and its own time horizon. SEO works slowly but lasts; ads buy visibility immediately but cost per click. The skill is not being present everywhere. It is picking the channels your customers genuinely search on, and matching them to what a single enquiry is worth to you.
Funnel. The best channel is useless if visitors land on a page that does not convince them or does not lead to an enquiry. We walk the path from first contact to enquiry and find the point where most prospects drop out.
Measurement. Without clean conversion tracking and metrics that mean something, every channel decision is guesswork. Measure first, optimise after — not the other way round. We go deeper on building these pieces in digital marketing consulting as a service.
Consulting or delivery — what you need, and when
Consulting and delivery are two different things, and you do not always need both. When the direction is settled, skip the strategy phase and go straight to work. When it is not, delivery without strategy is expensive trial and error.
You need consulting first if you spend on marketing without knowing what works, if several channels are half running, or if a larger investment is coming and you want certainty before you commit. You need delivery directly if you already know what has to happen — then our specialist teams execute it: SEO, Google Ads or a new website.
In practice the two flow into each other here. We advise, we prioritise together and, if you want, we build what sits at the top of the list. What separates us from a pure delivery agency is that we do not skip the strategy — and that we say so plainly when a channel will do nothing for you.
Gut feeling vs. evidence-led consulting
| Marketing on gut feeling | Digital marketing consulting | |
|---|---|---|
| Channel choice | Whatever everyone else is doing | What fits your offer, margin and search demand |
| Sequence | Everything at once, nothing properly | Prioritised — two or three levers first |
| Measurement | No clean tracking, mostly guesswork | Conversions tracked, effect visible |
| Budget | Spread out, with no idea what works | Aimed where it demonstrably pays off |
| Outcome | Effort with no clear result | A workable roadmap with reasoning |
| Recommendation | Sells whatever the agency offers | Honest — including "leave that alone" |

Frequently asked questions about digital marketing consulting
The first conversation is free and non-binding. In it we place your situation and tell you honestly whether consulting is worth it at all. For the consulting itself we deliberately quote no flat fee, because the effort swings widely with the goal: a one-off strategy review of a clearly defined question is a different job from ongoing support over several months. We bill for the time we spend and agree the frame before we start, so you always know what you are committing to. If the consulting turns into execution, our published anchors apply — local SEO from CHF 300 a month, full-service SEO from CHF 800 a month, a new website from CHF 3,000 to CHF 25,000. Google Ads management is quoted on the scope of the account and your ad budget. That way you pay for strategy only as far as you actually need it, instead of buying a retainer package that misses your question.
It depends on whether you already know what needs doing. If the direction is clear — "we need Google Ads", "our website has to be rebuilt" — skip the consulting and commission the work. Consulting earns its keep when exactly that is unclear: you spend money on marketing but cannot say which part of it works; you have three channels half running and none of them properly; or a larger investment is coming up and you want to know first whether it pays off. In those cases the strategy needs settling before the budget moves, otherwise you fund the wrong channel. In practice the two run into each other here. We advise, we prioritise together, and if you want it we then build whatever sits at the top of the list.
Headcount is not the deciding factor. What matters is whether you spend money on digital marketing regularly, or want to, and have nobody in-house with a strategic view across the channels. That typically describes SMEs, medical and dental practices, local service businesses and growing startups: there is a budget, but no marketing department deciding where it goes. For a one-person business on a very small budget, a full strategy engagement is usually oversized — a focused conversation and one concrete first step does more. For companies that already have someone owning marketing, we bring the outside view and the cross-channel experience that is missing internally. In the first conversation we tell you plainly which of those you are.
An agency executes: it builds your website, runs your ads, does your SEO. Consulting starts one step earlier and settles what should be done at all, and in which order. The difference is between "we will do this for you" and "first we tell you whether and why it is worth doing". Agencies naturally tend to recommend what they themselves sell; honest consulting is allowed to conclude that a channel does nothing for you, or that your current setup is already fine. DLM Digital is both — a consultancy and a delivery agency — and we keep the roles apart on purpose. In the consulting phase the subject is your best option, not our utilisation. For delivery we point you at our own digital agency, or at specialist partners when that suits you better.
It starts with a free first conversation about your goals, your current marketing and your numbers. That produces a clear picture of where you stand and where the biggest levers sit. Next we analyse your channels, your funnel and your measurement in detail, and turn that into a prioritised roadmap: what first, what later, what not at all. You do not get a 40-page deck to file away — you get a short, workable list with the reasoning behind each recommendation. Whether you then implement it yourself, brief your own team or hand it to us is your call. We have worked from Zollikon near Zurich since 2022 and have accompanied more than 300 projects; that experience is what the prioritisation rests on.
Usually clarity about which part of it works. Plenty of companies run social media, a newsletter, some SEO and the occasional ad campaign side by side without knowing which channel brings customers and which one only costs time and money. Consulting starts with your measurement: are conversions even tracked cleanly? Can you tell which channel produced the enquiry? Often it turns out that 80 per cent of the result comes from one or two channels and the rest is effort without effect. The gain is then not doing more, but doing the right thing more consistently and dropping the rest. We promise no rankings and no revenue guarantee — only an honest, data-based reading of where you stand and a priority order you can keep working from.
