WordPress is an open-source content management system (CMS) that lets you maintain websites and blogs without programming skills. It is the most widely used CMS in the world; its design comes from themes and its functionality is extended with plugins.

WordPress started in 2003 as blogging software and is today a full CMS. The software itself is free and open source; you install it on your own web hosting or use a managed service. A distinction is made between WordPress.org, the self-hosted software, and WordPress.com, a commercial hosting offer with limited options in the cheaper tiers.
The strength of WordPress is its ecosystem. Thousands of themes supply ready-made designs, and tens of thousands of plugins add forms, multilingual support, shops (WooCommerce), SEO features or bookings. Many agencies and freelancers know the system, and editors find their way around quickly. For a classic website with a blog that is maintained regularly by several people, WordPress remains a reasonable choice.
The weaknesses mostly arise from the way WordPress is used. Every plugin brings code, updates and potential security holes; websites with thirty or more plugins become slow and fragile. Page builders produce a lot of nested HTML, which weighs on loading time and Core Web Vitals. And because WordPress is so widespread, it is targeted deliberately — outdated plugins are one of the most common entry points for hacked websites.
It follows that WordPress needs looking after. Core, theme and plugins have to be updated regularly, backups stored externally and updates tested beforehand. Anyone who ensures this and keeps the system lean gets a solid website. Anyone who needs a very fast, low-maintenance site with few editorial changes is often better served by a modern framework or a headless CMS. Example: a slow WordPress site with a page builder
A property management firm runs a WordPress site with a page builder, a slider plugin, three analytics plugins, and one plugin each for cookies, forms and image galleries. On a smartphone, the homepage takes several seconds before any content appears. An audit shows that most of the code comes from plugins that are only needed on individual subpages. After a clean-up and replacing the slider with a simple image, the page loads considerably faster — without changing systems.

The software is free. Costs arise for hosting, the domain, premium themes and plugins, and for set-up, updates and upkeep. Over several years, maintenance and security are often the biggest item.
The core is considered well maintained. Most security problems are caused by outdated plugins and themes, weak passwords and missing updates. With a few well-maintained plugins, two-factor login and regular updates, WordPress is well protected.
