Web Hosting.
Web hosting is the service of making a website available on a server that is permanently connected to the internet, so it can be reached around the clock. Depending on the model, the site shares a server with others (shared hosting), gets its own resources (VPS, cloud) or runs on a managed platform (managed hosting).
Web Hosting — Explained in Detail
Every website consists of files, often supplemented by a database, which sit on a server and are delivered with every request. Hosting provides that server, the network connection, the power, the physical security of the data centre and — depending on the model — the operating system, updates and backups as well. From the outside you barely notice good hosting; you notice bad hosting through slow pages, outages and emails that land in spam because the server is on a blocklist.
The common models differ in who is responsible for which part. With shared hosting, many websites share one server; that is cheap, but performance depends on the neighbours. Managed hosting, for example specialised in WordPress, takes care of updates, caching and backups. A VPS (Virtual Private Server) offers guaranteed resources but requires your own maintenance. Cloud and serverless platforms scale automatically and suit modern frameworks, where static pages are distributed via a CDN.
For Swiss SMEs there is also the question of location. The revised Data Protection Act does not require servers to be in Switzerland; the EU is recognised as offering adequate data protection. What matters is a data processing agreement, transparent security measures and clarity about who has access. For particularly sensitive personal data — health data, for instance — a Swiss data centre can still be sensible or contractually required.
The cost of hosting is rarely the decisive item. It gets expensive when nobody is responsible for updates, backups and monitoring, and people have to improvise after an outage or a hack. At DLM Digital, hosting for a new website is free in the first year and then costs CHF 300 a year (domain not included); changes and upkeep are handled separately through website maintenance.
What matters when choosing
Five questions are enough for a good decision: does the model fit the website's technology (PHP and MySQL for WordPress, Node.js or static delivery for modern frameworks)? Who does updates and backups, and how quickly can a site be restored? Where are the servers, and is there a data processing agreement? Is HTTPS set up automatically? And: how do you leave again without having to rebuild the website?
Example: cheap hosting, expensive outages
A physiotherapy practice runs its WordPress website on a shared hosting package. Nobody does the updates, and backups are made only once a week on the same server. After a plugin hack the website shows spam links, and the last clean backup has already been overwritten. Rebuilding costs many times what managed hosting with external backups would have cost over several years.
What a hosting model really costs over the years depends heavily on the architecture of the website. When we build a new website, hosting with us is free in the first year and then CHF 300 a year; the domain is not included.

No. The revised Data Protection Act (DSG) does not require a Swiss server location. Hosting in the EU is permissible in most cases. For particularly sensitive data or contractual requirements, a Swiss data centre can make sense.
That depends heavily on the model: simple shared hosting is cheap, while managed platforms with updates, backups and monitoring cost more. At DLM Digital, hosting for a new website is free in the first year, then CHF 300 a year; the domain is not included.
The domain is the name, hosting is the place where the website lives. Both can be with the same provider, but they do not have to be. Through DNS, the domain points to the hosting server.
No. Hosting provides the server. Maintenance covers changes, content, updates to the website itself and bug fixing. Some providers bundle both, others do not — the question belongs in every quote.
