Website Relaunch.

A website relaunch is the fundamental renewal of an existing website — its design, structure, content or technology — under the same domain. The aim is a better website without losing existing rankings, links and visitor paths along the way.

Website Relaunch — Explained in Detail

A relaunch can go to different depths. In a pure redesign the structure stays and only the appearance changes. In a technical relaunch the system changes, for example from a builder or WordPress to a modern framework. In a full relaunch, design, structure, content and technology are renewed at the same time. The more that changes, the greater the opportunity — and the risk.

The biggest risk is lost addresses. Every page of the old website has a URL that Google knows, that may be linked to and through which visitors arrive. If this URL changes without a redirect, the visitor lands on a 404 error page and the old page's rankings are lost. That is why URL mapping is at the core of every relaunch: collect all old addresses — from the sitemap, a crawl and Search Console — assign each one a new address with matching content, and connect them via 301 redirect. How to protect rankings in a migration is explained in detail in the entry on the 301 redirect.

Content matters just as much. Pages that rank today should keep their core statements or be improved, not cut back for a slimmer design. Titles, headings and internal links shape how Google understands a page. Anyone who rewrites every text, merges pages and switches technology at the same time during a relaunch can barely tell afterwards which change had which effect.

After go-live the checking begins: test redirects, submit the sitemap in Search Console, watch error reports in the first weeks, test forms and tracking. Fluctuations in the first weeks are normal. If rankings remain clearly below the previous level after several weeks, the cause is usually a missing redirect, a blocked section or lost content.

The relaunch checklist in brief

Before: set goals, record the old site's metrics (rankings, visitors, enquiries), collect all old URLs, identify content with rankings, draw up the redirect list. During development: test the new site on a staging environment without indexing. At go-live: activate redirects, remove the indexing block, submit the sitemap. Afterwards: check redirects and 404 errors, compare metrics.

Example: new website, old paths

A construction company replaces a ten-year-old website. The old system had addresses such as /index.php?id=27 for the 'Renovation' service page. The new page is called /renovation. Without a redirect, the well-ranking renovation page loses its place and links from partners lead nowhere. With a redirect from every old address to the matching new page, rankings and links are preserved.

We carry out relaunches with full URL mapping as part of a website redesign. Before a relaunch, a website audit clarifies what needs to be preserved.

Frequently Asked Questions About Website Relaunch

Not necessarily. With complete 301 redirects, preserved content and clean technology, rankings usually stay stable or improve. Short-term fluctuations in the first weeks are normal.

A redesign mainly renews the appearance. A relaunch can additionally cover structure, content and technology. In everyday use the terms are often used interchangeably; what matters is whether URLs change.

At DLM Digital a new website is delivered within two weeks once all materials are in. For large websites with many pages, the content review and redirect list take additional time, which is planned in advance.
