Shopify.

Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform that lets businesses run an online shop without maintaining their own servers or shop software. Products, orders, payments, shipping and stock are managed in the Shopify admin; the look of the shop comes from a theme.

Shopify — Explained in Detail

Shopify is a SaaS solution (Software as a Service): the shop runs on the provider's servers, Shopify takes care of security and updates, and you pay a monthly subscription plus, depending on the payment method, transaction fees. The alternative model is self-hosted shop systems such as WooCommerce or Shopware, which give you more freedom but also more responsibility.

A Shopify shop has three layers. The admin manages products, variants, stock, customers and orders. The theme determines the look and can be adapted through a visual editor and, at code level, with the Liquid template language. Apps add functions such as reviews, subscriptions, translations or connections to accounting and shipping. The app landscape in particular is both a strength and a risk: much can be added quickly, but every app costs money, loads scripts and can weigh on the shop's speed.

For Swiss shops, a few points matter particularly. Payment methods such as TWINT, credit cards, PayPal or invoice are integrated through payment providers — more on this in the entry Payment Service Provider. Multiple languages (German, French, Italian, English) and markets with their own prices and currencies are possible, but need clean set-up including hreflang. VAT, shipping zones and customs questions for deliveries abroad should be settled before launch.

For SEO, Shopify offers a solid foundation but has well-known quirks: fixed URL prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/, duplicate product paths via collections, and themes that output structured data incompletely. Many shops give away potential through thin category texts, automatically generated titles and product descriptions copied from the manufacturer. The lever here is usually not the platform but the work on the content.

Example: website and shop with one look

A fashion business offering made-to-measure and off-the-peg clothing needs two things: a website that brings in consultation appointments, and a shop for ready-made products. At JUCAN Massanzüge, the Shopify shop runs with the same look and feel as the website, every outfit shown is linked to the shop, and gift vouchers can be bought directly online. At The Sartorialist, the branded goods sit in a separate Shopify shop with instalment payments via HeidiPay.

How we set up Shopify projects is described under Shopify agency Switzerland. For existing shops, our e-commerce consulting looks at where SEO and conversion are stuck.

When Shopify is not the best choice

With highly individual ordering processes — configurators with complex pricing logic, B2B shops with customer-specific prices and approvals, workflows tightly interlocked with an ERP — Shopify reaches its limits or becomes expensive through numerous apps. Then it is worth comparing it with a headless solution or a custom application.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shopify

Yes, via payment providers that support TWINT and offer a Shopify integration. Which providers are suitable and at what fees should be compared before launch, because this affects the total cost of the shop.

Shopify offers a solid technical foundation, but with fixed URL structures and theme-dependent structured data. The bigger difference comes from original category and product copy, clean titles and good internal linking.

Shopify is easier to run because hosting, security and updates sit with the provider. WooCommerce offers more freedom and no platform fees, but requires your own maintenance. The choice depends on how much technology you want to be responsible for yourself.
