Shopify SEO.
Shopify SEO is the search engine optimisation of online shops on the Shopify platform. It uses the built-in features such as the automatic sitemap and canonical tags and works specifically on the system's peculiarities: fixed URL structures, duplicate product paths, collection pages, theme loading time and product data for Google search.
Shopify SEO — Explained in Detail
Shopify brings a lot to the table for SEO: an automatically generated XML sitemap, canonical tags, HTTPS, editable titles and meta descriptions for products, collections and pages, and a customisable robots.txt via the robots.txt.liquid template. Technically, a shop is therefore not badly set up. The levers lie mainly in structure, content and theme.
One peculiarity is the fixed URL structure. Products always sit under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and blog posts under /blogs/. In addition, a product is often also reachable under /collections/name/products/product. Shopify sets a canonical to the main address for this, but many themes link internally to the long variant. It is cleaner if the theme links directly to /products/, so that crawlers do not have to process duplicate paths.
A shop's most important ranking pages are usually the collections, not individual products. Someone searching for 'made-to-measure suit Zurich' or 'children's bike helmet' wants to see a selection. Collection pages therefore need their own introductory text, sensible sub-collections and clear titles. Product pages need original descriptions instead of manufacturer texts that appear identically in dozens of other shops, as well as complete product data with price, availability and images, which Google uses via structured data for product rich results and Google Shopping.
A common brake is apps and overloaded themes. Every installed app can load additional scripts; after uninstallation, code remnants sometimes remain in the theme. That worsens loading time and Core Web Vitals. Regularly checking installed apps and the loading time of the most important pages is part of looking after a shop.
Swiss particularities
Swiss shops often target several language regions. Shopify Markets allows language versions with their own URLs (such as /fr/), which are linked via hreflang; the translations should be genuine, locally worded texts. Prices in CHF, shipping costs within Switzerland, delivery times and payment methods such as TWINT (the widely used Swiss mobile payment app) are important information for customers and belong visibly on product and collection pages.
It is also worth looking beyond the platform: a Merchant Center account enables free product listings in Google Shopping, and a well-maintained Google Business Profile helps shops with a showroom or pick-up point.
Example from our work: The Sartorialist
For The Sartorialist, a menswear outfitter for made-to-measure suits in Zurich, we delivered the website, SEO and a Shopify shop. The website, in seven languages, leads to a fitting in the showroom; the shop on its own subdomain sells branded goods. The split clearly separates search intent: someone looking for a made-to-measure suit lands on the website, someone who wants to buy a particular product lands in the shop. The details are in the The Sartorialist case study.
How we set up shops on Shopify is described on the page Shopify Agency Switzerland; for shops on other systems, see the page E-commerce Agency.

hreflangFrequently Asked Questions About Shopify SEO
Shopify offers a solid technical foundation with an automatic sitemap, canonical tags and editable meta information. There are limitations with the fixed URL structure. Whether a shop ranks depends mainly on collection pages, original product copy, loading time and prominence.
The part after /products/ or /collections/ (the handle), yes; the prefixes themselves, no. If you change a handle, Shopify offers to set up a redirect from the old address automatically. This option should stay enabled.
Better not. Manufacturer texts appear identically in many shops. Original descriptions covering use, fit, material and answers to typical customer questions set a shop apart and help in search.
