Website Builder.

A website builder is an online service such as Wix, Jimdo, Squarespace or Webflow with which you assemble a website yourself from templates and a visual editor, without programming. Hosting, technology and updates are included in the subscription.

Website Builder — Explained in Detail

Builders have greatly lowered the barrier to having your own website. You choose a template, replace text and images, connect the domain and you are online. For a sole trader who needs a business card on the web, for a club or association, or for a first test of a business idea, that is a reasonable route: low costs, no dependence on an agency and full control over the content.

The limits appear as soon as the website is meant to win customers. Builders often generate heavy HTML and a lot of JavaScript, which weighs on loading time on smartphones. Control over technical SEO details — page structure, structured data, canonicals, redirects, image formats — is restricted or locked behind more expensive subscription tiers. Custom functions such as calculators, configurators or connections to CRM and accounting are only possible via external widgets.

The most important point is switching. A builder website can generally not be exported and run elsewhere; design and structure are tied to the platform. Anyone who moves later rebuilds the site and has to redirect every old address to the new structure via 301 redirect to keep their rankings. That is doable, but it should be considered from the start.

Webflow occupies a special position: it is aimed at designers, offers more creative freedom and cleaner code than typical builders, but also requires more learning. For many SMEs the question in the end is not 'builder or agency' but 'what website do we need for our goal, and who will maintain it?'.

Example: from a builder to your own website

A hairdresser starts out with a Jimdo site: homepage, prices, contact. That is enough for the first few years. With a second salon and the wish to be found for 'hairdresser' in two neighbourhoods, the site hits its limits: no proper location pages with a clean structure, slow loading, no influence on structured data. The move to a custom website is made with a complete list of the old addresses and matching redirects, so the existing rankings are not lost.

Moving away from Wix or Jimdo without losing rankings comes down to exactly this list of old addresses and redirects. We build a custom website as a package from CHF 3,000, delivered within two weeks once all materials are in.

Frequently Asked Questions About Website Builder

Not fundamentally. For simple sites with little competition they can be enough. The limits lie in loading time, control over technical details and larger page structures. In competitive markets this carries more weight.

Generally not in the sense of an export. Content can be carried over, but design and technology have to be rebuilt. What matters when switching is redirecting every old address.

When the website is meant to bring in measurable enquiries, when several locations or services need their own pages, when functions such as calculators or integrations are required, or when there is no time for upkeep and optimisation.
