Perplexity.
Perplexity is an AI search engine that answers questions in natural language with a fully formulated answer and displays numbered source references with links to the websites used. Perplexity is relevant to companies because it makes visible which websites serve as sources, and because its users often ask specifically about providers and comparisons.
Perplexity — Explained in Detail
Perplexity was founded in San Francisco in 2022 and is one of the best-known representatives of a new kind of search engine, often called an answer engine. Instead of a list of ten links, the person receives a coherent answer compiled from several web sources. Each statement is linked to a numbered source that can be clicked. Follow-up questions are possible in the same conversation.
Technically, Perplexity combines its own web search with language models. For a question, suitable pages are searched for, fetched and evaluated; a language model formulates the answer from them. This method follows the principle of retrieval-augmented generation. Perplexity operates its own crawler for this, PerplexityBot, and also fetches pages for specific user questions via Perplexity-User.
For company visibility, Perplexity has a special feature: the sources are openly visible. You can see which websites are drawn on for a question and learn from that. Frequently cited pages are those that answer a question clearly and directly, contain concrete information such as prices, locations and processes, are current and are confirmed by other sources. Directories, comparison sites and specialist articles often appear as sources.
Perplexity is considerably less widespread in Switzerland than Google or ChatGPT, but it is used precisely by people who research and compare deliberately, for example when choosing a service provider. Since answers vary from query to query, a single check says little; regular monitoring with unchanging questions makes sense.
How to appear as a source in Perplexity
The fundamentals overlap with GEO: PerplexityBot must be allowed to fetch the website and must find the content in the HTML without JavaScript. Pages should answer questions directly, with clear headings and self-contained paragraphs that can be extracted as a quote. Concrete, verifiable information such as scope of services, starting prices, service area and contact details increases the chance of being chosen as a source.
What others write also counts. Listings in industry directories, media mentions and reviews on several platforms provide confirmation. If, for a question about providers, Perplexity mainly cites comparison portals, a complete listing there is often the quickest way into the answer.
Example: a question about a fiduciary firm
Someone asks Perplexity: 'Which fiduciary firms in Winterthur help self-employed people with their tax return, and what does it cost?' The answer names a few providers and draws on their websites, a directory and a guide article. Providers whose website mentions neither self-employed people nor prices do not appear, even if they offer the service.
A dedicated page for self-employed clients with the process, required documents and a price range increases the chance of being drawn on for such questions. The AI visibility check tests whether your website is readable for AI search engines; in GEO management, Perplexity is one of the five platforms we check every month with fixed questions.

AI Search EngineFrequently Asked Questions About Perplexity
Yes, an AI search engine. It searches the web, fetches suitable pages and uses a language model to formulate an answer with source references. Unlike Google, the answer is in the foreground, not the list of results.
From its own web search, for which PerplexityBot captures pages, and from pages fetched for a specific question. The sources used are shown in the answer with numbers and links.
There is no listing as there is with a directory. Perplexity accesses publicly reachable websites. What matters is that your website is reachable for PerplexityBot and answers questions clearly, and that other sources confirm your information.
