AI Search Engine.
An AI search engine answers search queries with an answer formulated by a language model, compiled from current web sources and usually accompanied by source references. Examples are Perplexity, search in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and AI Mode and AI Overviews in Google Search.
AI Search Engine — Explained in Detail
A classic search engine delivers a list of pages that a person has to open and evaluate themselves. An AI search engine takes over this step: it searches for suitable pages, reads them and summarises the answer in its own words. The sources are given as links or footnotes. Follow-up questions are possible in a dialogue without searching again.
Several steps run in the background. The question is interpreted and often broken down into several sub-searches (query fan-out). For each sub-search, results are retrieved from an index, either its own or a third party's, such as Bing or Google. A language model evaluates the passages found and formulates an answer based on these sources. This basic principle is called retrieval-augmented generation and is meant to reduce hallucinations, but it does not prevent them completely.
The best-known offerings differ in origin and focus. Perplexity is built as a standalone answer engine and shows sources particularly clearly. ChatGPT has a search function that retrieves current pages when a question requires it. Microsoft Copilot is built on the Bing index. Google integrates AI answers directly into search, as AI Overviews above the results and as AI Mode for detailed dialogues.
For companies, the question shifts from 'What position am I in?' to 'Am I named or recommended as a source?'. Some users no longer click through after an AI answer (zero-click search). Those who are named, on the other hand, gain trust, because the recommendation comes from a seemingly neutral authority. This can be measured through mentions for defined questions, for example as share of model or citation rate.
What a website needs for AI search engines
Reachability: the providers' AI crawlers are allowed to fetch the website, and the content is in the HTML without JavaScript. Clarity: each page answers a question directly, with concrete information on service, location, price and process. Unambiguity: company name, address and offer are described the same way everywhere and marked up with structured data. Confirmation: other sources such as directories, reviews and media mention the company.
These points largely coincide with good SEO. The difference lies in the weighting: AI systems prefer self-contained, quotable passages and check information across several sources.
Example: the same question in four systems
A property maintenance company asks the question 'Who provides caretaking for apartment buildings in Zug?' in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. Google shows an AI Overview with results below it, ChatGPT names a few companies with a short justification, Perplexity lists providers with numbered sources, and Copilot refers to Bing results. The company itself only appears in Google, because although its website ranks well, it nowhere clearly mentions apartment buildings or Zug.
With a dedicated page for caretaking of apartment buildings in the canton of Zug, complete directory listings and LocalBusiness schema, the chance of also being named in the AI answers increases. How we measure this every month across five platforms is described on the page GEO Agency Switzerland; the AI visibility check offers an initial check.

The best known are Perplexity, search in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI features, namely AI Overviews and AI Mode. There are also other providers and AI features in browsers.
Not so far. Google remains by far the most-used search engine in Switzerland and integrates AI answers itself. AI search engines are growing, though, especially for research and comparison questions.
Through a website that is reachable for AI crawlers, answers questions clearly and contains concrete information, supplemented by consistent directory listings and mentions on other websites. There is no guarantee of being named.
