Keyword Mapping.

Keyword mapping is the assignment of every important search term to exactly one responsible page on a website. It prevents several pages from competing for the same topic and shows where a page is missing or superfluous.

Keyword Mapping — Explained in Detail

After keyword research you often have hundreds of terms. Keyword mapping puts them in order: terms with the same search intent are grouped, and each group gets exactly one page that is responsible for it. The result is a table with page, main term, secondary terms and status (existing, to be revised, to be built, deliberately not to be built).

Without mapping, almost the same thing always happens on websites that have grown over time: a blog post, a service page and a location page all cover the same topic, and Google cannot tell which one is meant. The result is keyword cannibalisation: fluctuating rankings, with no page making it to the front.

An example from our own website: 'Webagentur Zürich' (web agency Zurich) is assigned to the home page, 'Webdesign Zürich' to the Web Design Zurich page, 'SEO Agentur Zürich' to the SEO Agency Zurich page and 'Suchmaschinenoptimierung Zürich' to the SEO Optimisation Zurich page. New content on these topics is not built as a separate page but links to the responsible page.

How a keyword map is built

First: group terms by search intent. A good test is Google search itself. If two terms show largely the same results, they belong on one page. If they show different page types (guides versus providers, for instance), they belong apart. Second: check for each group whether a suitable page already exists; Google Search Console shows which page currently appears for which term.

Third: mark gaps and duplicates. If a page is missing, it is planned — provided demand supports it. If there are two pages on the same topic, the weaker one is merged and redirected to the stronger one with a 301 redirect.

Keyword mapping and location pages

Mapping is particularly important for location and industry pages. Google treats pages that differ only by a swapped place name as doorway pages. A clean map determines for which places genuinely independent content and demand exist, and which are well served by an overview page.

At DLM Digital, keyword mapping is part of every SEO analysis and every relaunch concept. On existing websites with cannibalisation problems, it is often one of the most effective single measures.

Frequently Asked Questions About Keyword Mapping

So that every page has a clear job and no two pages compete for the same search term. It also shows where pages are missing and where existing pages should be merged.

Most reliably by looking at the Google results: if the top 10 for the two search terms overlap heavily, Google treats them as the same intent and they belong on one page. If they show different pages or page types, they should be kept separate.

As a rule, the stronger page is designated as the responsible page, the content of the weaker one is worked into it, and the weaker one is redirected with a 301. Internal links are switched to the responsible page.
