Image SEO.

Image SEO is the optimisation of images so that they are found in Google Images, in Google Lens and in the normal search results without weighing down a page's loading time. It includes descriptive file names and alt text, suitable formats such as WebP, the right size, lazy loading and original photos instead of interchangeable stock images.

Image SEO — Explained in Detail

Images do two jobs on a website: they show what is being described, and they are searched for themselves. Google Images, visual search with Google Lens and image blocks in the normal results are separate routes by which people reach a website. Someone who wants to renovate a bathroom often searches for images first to gather ideas, and so ends up with the provider whose photos are the most convincing.

Search engines understand images much better today than they used to, but they still rely on clues. The most important are the alt text, which describes the image content in words, the file name ('bathroom-renovation-meilen.webp' instead of 'IMG_4711.jpg'), the surrounding text and a caption. For people with visual impairments, the alt text is also the only way to grasp the content; image SEO and digital accessibility go hand in hand.

Technically it is about size and format. Photos straight from the camera often weigh several megabytes and slow the page down considerably, which worsens the Core Web Vitals, especially LCP. Modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, a resolution adapted to the display with several sizes for different screens, and lazy loading for images outside the visible area solve this. Important: the largest image in the visible area should specifically not be loaded lazily.

The third aspect is uniqueness. Stock photos appear on thousands of websites; they do not distinguish an offer and have hardly any chance in image search. Original photos of projects, the team and the premises prove that there is a real company doing real work. That builds trust with people and is an indication of experience in the sense of E-E-A-T.

Checklist for images on SME websites

Original photos instead of stock images wherever possible. A file name describing the content and, where appropriate, the location. Alt text that describes what can be seen, without a list of keywords. WebP or AVIF format, width matching the display, several sizes via srcset. Lazy loading for images below the visible area, not for the main image. Specify a fixed width and height so that the layout does not jump while loading.

For images that should appear in Discover or as a large preview, also: at least 1,200 pixels wide and large image previews allowed. For product images in shops: several views, a consistent background and structured product data.

Example: a bathroom designer's project images

A bathroom designer on Lake Zurich's Gold Coast shows 60 project photos on his website, all as JPEGs of 4 to 6 megabytes, with file names straight from the camera and no alt text. The gallery page loads very slowly on smartphones, and none of the images appears in image search.

After the revision, the images are converted to WebP and stored in several sizes, carry names such as 'walk-in-shower-natural-stone-kuesnacht.webp' and descriptive alt text, and each project has its own page with a short description. How we handle images when building a website is shown on the page Web Design Zurich; the free SEO check tests whether the loading time is right.

Frequently Asked Questions About Image SEO

A sentence that describes what can be seen in the image, as if you were explaining it to someone on the phone. For example: 'Level-access shower with natural stone and a glass wall in a renovated bathroom'. No keyword lists; purely decorative images get an empty alt attribute.

WebP is widely supported and considerably smaller than JPEG at comparable quality. AVIF compresses even more. SVG is suitable for logos and graphics. More important than the format is that images are not delivered larger than necessary.

Not directly. But they bring no advantage in image search, do not distinguish your offer and appear less credible than original photos. Where possible, your own images are the better choice.
