Backlinks.

Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your website. Google evaluates them as a trust signal: those who are linked frequently and from strong sources rank higher. Quality beats quantity — a link from a reputable Swiss newspaper counts more than 1,000 spam links.

Backlinks — Explained in Detail

Backlinks (also: inbound links, external links) are hyperlinks that point from an external website to your website. Google treats each backlink as a 'vote' for your website — a signal that your content is valuable and trustworthy. This principle has been one of the strongest ranking factors since Google's early days.

Not all backlinks are equally valuable. A link from a reputable Swiss business magazine or a university can be worth more than 1,000 links from obscure directory sites. Google evaluates the quality of a backlink based on: domain authority of the linking site, topical relevance, anchor text (the clickable link text), and position of the link on the page. A natural, diverse backlink profile is the goal.

Natural link building (link earning) is the most sustainable method: create content that is worth linking to — comprehensive guides, studies, tools, or explanations. Active link building includes: guest posts on relevant websites, PR measures, listings in high-quality Swiss directories, and digital PR. Beware of 'spam links' — Google can devalue such artificial profiles or penalize them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Backlinks

There is no magic number. For local Zurich search queries, you need fewer than for national keywords. More important than the quantity is the quality: 10 strong, relevant backlinks are significantly more valuable than 1,000 weak ones. Analyze the backlink profiles of your direct competitors as a reference — this shows what's needed in your niche.

Toxic backlinks come from spam sites, link farms, or irrelevant directories. They can negatively impact your rankings, especially when built in large numbers. Google offers the Disavow Tool to devalue such links. With tools like Ahrefs or Google Search Console, you can regularly monitor your backlink profile.

The anchor text is the clickable link text in a backlink. A natural anchor text profile contains a mix of brand names ('DLM Digital'), generic texts ('here', 'this website'), URL anchors, and keyword-rich anchors. Excessive use of keyword-rich anchor texts can be classified as manipulative.
