SEO Tools.
SEO tools are programs and services that provide data for search engine optimisation: measurements for your own website (such as Google Search Console), technical checks (crawlers, PageSpeed Insights) and estimates of keywords, competition and backlinks (such as SEMrush, Ahrefs or Sistrix). They do not replace judgement but provide the basis for it.
SEO Tools — Explained in Detail
SEO tools can be divided into three groups. The first group provides measurements directly from the search engines: Google Search Console with clicks, impressions, positions and indexing status, Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing and the Google Business Profile with local metrics. These data are free and the most reliable source for your own website.
The second group checks the technology: crawlers such as Screaming Frog search a website like a search engine bot and find broken links, redirect chains, missing titles or duplicates. PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse measure loading time and Core Web Vitals. Google's Rich Results Test checks structured data.
The third group consists of paid databases such as SEMrush, Ahrefs or Sistrix. They estimate search volume, keyword difficulty, rankings and backlinks for any domain and thus make competitor comparisons possible. Their figures are extrapolations, not measurements. For the small Swiss market, search volumes in particular are uncertain; in our comparisons, SEMrush values were sometimes many times higher than those in the Google Keyword Planner.
For AI visibility, new tools are currently emerging that track whether a brand is named in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. The methodology of these tools is still inconsistent; results depend heavily on the questions asked, the language and the location. A fixed, unchanging list of questions is therefore more important than the tool itself.
The basic toolkit for an SME
For most small and medium-sized businesses, free tools are enough: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for measurements, the Google Business Profile for local figures, PageSpeed Insights for loading time, the free version of a crawler (up to 500 URLs with Screaming Frog) and the Keyword Planner in Google Ads for search volume.
Paid tools are worthwhile if competitors are analysed regularly, backlinks monitored or many keywords tracked. For a single SME this is rarely necessary; agencies use them for many clients at once.
Example: putting tool warnings into perspective
An online tool reports 140 problems to a medical practice: titles that are too long, missing alt text on decorative images, a low word count on the contact page. The practice management is worried. On closer inspection, most of the notices are irrelevant. Only two matter: the 'Appointments' page is set to noindex, and the practice can be reached under two domains without a redirect.
Tools count patterns, but they do not weigh them. This assessment is the real value of an SEO audit. We have put together a selection of free tools on our Tools page; the SEO check gives a quick review of your own home page.

Google Search ConsoleFrequently Asked Questions About SEO Tools
For your own website, the free Google Search Console is indispensable because it provides real measurements. SEMrush, Ahrefs and Sistrix are widely used for competitor and keyword data; which one fits depends on the purpose. All of them provide estimates for other domains.
Yes. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, PageSpeed Insights, the Rich Results Test, the Keyword Planner and the free version of Screaming Frog cover an SME's basic needs.
They are estimates. For Switzerland they are sometimes considerably too high. Important terms should therefore be cross-checked with the Google Keyword Planner or your own Search Console data.
