SEO Audit.

An SEO audit is a systematic review of a website for everything that affects its visibility in search engines: technology, content, structure, internal linking, backlinks and local signals. The result is a prioritised list of concrete measures, not just a collection of warnings from a tool.

SEO Audit — Explained in Detail

An SEO audit answers the question of why a website is not found as well as it could be, and what to do next. It looks at the website from three angles: technical (can Google crawl and index all important pages?), content (do the pages answer the questions customers search for?) and external (how does the website compare with the competition, which links and mentions does it have?).

The data basis is real measurements: Google Search Console with clicks, impressions and positions, a crawl of all URLs, loading time measurements, the competitors' rankings and, for local businesses, the Google Business Profile. These data produce a picture that says far more than an automatic score: which pages get impressions but hardly any clicks? Which pages compete for the same keyword? Where are pages missing on topics people search for?

A good audit ends with priorities. Not every tool warning matters; a missing meta description on a privacy policy page is irrelevant, whereas a service page set to noindex by mistake is serious. The list of measures should therefore be sorted by impact and effort, so that it is clear what will be implemented in the first few weeks and what can wait.

Today, a complete audit also includes a look at AI systems: are your own pages reached by AI crawlers, is the most important information readable without JavaScript, is there a clear entity with consistent details? These points help decide whether a company appears in AI Overviews or in ChatGPT answers.

SEO audit, SEO check and SEO analysis: the difference

An automatic SEO check examines a single page for known patterns in seconds: title present, H1 present, images compressed. It is useful as a starting point but does not replace judgement. An SEO analysis goes deeper but usually looks only at one part, such as keywords or technology. The audit combines all areas, weights them and derives a plan.

Our website offers all three levels: the free SEO check for a quick assessment, an explanation of SEO analysis for anyone who wants to check things themselves, and the website audit from CHF 1,500 with a prioritised action plan.

Example: a physiotherapy centre with two locations

A physiotherapy centre with locations in Zurich-Oerlikon and Wallisellen gets hardly any enquiries via Google. The audit shows three main causes: both locations share a single contact page without the address in the text, the service pages are stored as PDF downloads and therefore barely able to rank, and the Google Business Profile for Wallisellen is not verified.

The list of measures starts with verifying the profile (one hour of effort, high impact), followed by separate location pages with address, directions and team, and converting the PDFs into HTML pages. Tool notices such as overly long titles on blog articles deliberately go to the end of the list.

Frequently Asked Questions About SEO Audit

At DLM Digital, an SEO audit starts at CHF 1,500. The scope depends on the size of the website, the number of languages and locations, and whether competitor and AI visibility are examined too.

An audit makes sense before or after a relaunch, after an unexplained drop in visitor numbers and roughly once a year for websites that keep growing. With ongoing SEO management, the monthly review replaces part of it.

A prioritised list of measures with reasons, effort estimates and responsibilities, plus the data basis. An audit that only delivers a list of tool warnings is of little help for implementation.
