SEM (Search Engine Marketing).

SEM (search engine marketing) is the umbrella term for everything a company does to become visible in search engines. It covers search engine optimisation (SEO) for unpaid results and search engine advertising (SEA) for paid ads, for example through Google Ads.

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) — Explained in Detail

Search engine marketing offers two routes to the top. With SEO you work on the website itself so that it ranks well in the unpaid results. That takes time but lasts, and every click is free. With SEA (search engine advertising) you buy ad placements, usually through Google Ads and billed per click (CPC). That works immediately but stops as soon as the budget runs out.

In German-speaking countries 'SEM' is often used as a synonym for paid search ads. The correct meaning is the broader one: SEM covers both. The distinction is more than a matter of wording, because the choice 'SEO or SEA' is usually framed the wrong way. The more useful question is which channel suits which search term and which phase of the business.

An example: a newly opened physiotherapy practice in Dübendorf has no organic visibility yet. In the first few months, Google Ads campaigns for 'physiotherapy Dübendorf' bring in the first patients. In parallel, the website and business profile are built up for local SEO. Once the organic positions carry their weight, the ad budget can be concentrated on terms where ads work particularly well or that are hard to reach organically.

How SEO and SEA work together

Google Ads delivers data quickly: which search terms bring enquiries, which texts get clicked? These insights feed into the SEO work. Conversely, a good landing page lowers the cost per click in Google Ads, because landing page experience feeds into the Quality Score. And where a brand appears both organically and with an ad, it occupies more space on the results page.

How the two channels differ in cost and effect is compared in the guide Google Ads or SEO.

Search engine marketing at DLM Digital

We look after both channels: SEO (local SEO from CHF 300 per month, full-service SEO from CHF 400 per month) and Google Ads (management from CHF 300 per month for an ad budget of up to CHF 1,500 per month). The ad budget goes directly to Google and is never included in the management fee.

There is also a third area that the classic notion of SEM does not yet cover: visibility in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, see GEO, and, since 1 September 2026, paid ads in ChatGPT (ChatGPT Ads).

Frequently Asked Questions About SEM (Search Engine Marketing)

SEM is the umbrella term for marketing in search engines. SEO is one part of it and concerns the unpaid search results. The other part is SEA, meaning paid search ads such as Google Ads. In everyday use, SEM is often wrongly applied to paid ads alone.

That depends on the goal and the starting point. SEA brings visibility immediately but costs money per click. SEO takes time but then delivers visits without click costs. For most SMEs a combination makes sense: ads for a fast start and for competitive terms, SEO as the lasting foundation.

At DLM Digital, local SEO starts at CHF 300 per month, full-service SEO at CHF 400 per month, and Google Ads management at CHF 300 per month for an ad budget of up to CHF 1,500 per month. The Google Ads budget always comes on top and goes directly to Google.
