SEA (Search Engine Advertising).
SEA (search engine advertising) means paid ads that appear above or below the organic search results as soon as someone types in a booked search term. In Switzerland, SEA in practice almost always means Google Ads, supplemented by Microsoft Advertising for Bing.
SEA (Search Engine Advertising) — Explained in Detail
SEA is the paid part of search engine marketing. A company books search terms, writes ads for them and sets the maximum it is willing to pay per click. For every search query an auction decides which ads appear and in which order. As a rule you only pay when someone clicks on the ad — hence the name pay-per-click. The price per click is the CPC; the position results from the Ad Rank.
The big difference from SEO lies in speed and in dependence on budget. SEA delivers visibility from the day the campaign goes live and stops exactly when the budget is stopped. SEO takes months but keeps working without paying for every visit. The two channels are not mutually exclusive: SEA is good for capturing demand immediately and for testing which terms actually bring enquiries; SEO builds the lasting foundation. The umbrella term for both is SEM (search engine marketing).
Whether SEA pays off is rarely decided in the ad itself, but before and after it. Before: choosing search terms with clear purchase intent and a clean list of negative keywords, so that no money flows into research searches. After: a landing page that shows exactly the advertised offer, and conversion tracking that counts real enquiries. Without tracking, you steer the budget by clicks — and clicks are not customers.
For Swiss SMEs, SEA makes particular sense when demand is clearly phrased ('emergency electrician Zurich', 'fiduciary Winterthur') and a single job has noticeable value. With very small budgets, or offers that hardly anyone searches for, the channel is often the wrong one: you mostly end up paying for the learning phase. Ad budget and management are two separate items — the budget goes directly to Google, the management fee to the agency.
Example: SEA for a plumbing business in the Zurich area
Suppose a plumbing business with six employees wants more bathroom renovation jobs. Instead of bidding broadly on 'plumbing', it books a few specific terms such as 'bathroom renovation Zurich' and 'bathroom renovation cost', limits delivery to its catchment area and excludes terms such as 'apprenticeship', 'DIY' or 'hardware store'. The ads do not lead to the home page but to a page about bathroom renovation with the process, reference photos and a short enquiry form.
After a few weeks, conversion tracking shows which search terms actually trigger enquiries. Terms without enquiries are paused and the budget moves to the ones that work. Exactly this loop — measure, cut, shift — is the difference between a campaign that only buys clicks and one that brings in jobs. How we set this up is described on the page Google Ads Agency Zurich.
What SEA costs
The costs consist of two parts: the ad budget, which goes directly to Google, and the management. Click prices depend on industry, region and competition and can be estimated in advance with Google's Keyword Planner. For ongoing management at DLM Digital: from CHF 300 a month for an ad budget of up to CHF 1,500 a month; the ad budget itself is never included. Google Ads Agency ZurichFrequently Asked Questions About SEA (Search Engine Advertising)
SEM (search engine marketing) is the umbrella term for everything that creates visibility in search engines — paid and unpaid. SEA is only the paid part of it, in other words the ads. In German-speaking countries, however, SEM is often used to mean the same as SEA, so it is worth briefly asking what is meant in a conversation.
Sometimes. If you already rank first organically for an important term, an additional ad often wins only a few extra clicks. It is different when competitors bid on your own company name, or when your organic position for important terms fluctuates. A time-limited test with clean tracking shows whether the ad brings additional enquiries or merely shifts existing ones.
The ads usually appear within a day of approval. Meaningful results still take a few weeks, because enough clicks and conversions first have to come together to tell good search terms from bad ones. Anyone who judges after three days is usually judging chance.
