Offline Conversion Import.

With an offline conversion import, a company reports sales that happen outside the website back to an advertising platform such as Google Ads after the fact. The platform then sees not only which clicks triggered an enquiry but which led to a real order or revenue.

Offline Conversion Import — Explained in Detail

Many SMEs do not sell in an online shop but in conversation: an enquiry arrives via the website, followed by a phone call, a site visit, a quote and eventually the order. Normal conversion tracking measures only the first step, the enquiry. To the advertising platform every enquiry therefore looks equally valuable, even if one leads to a major order and the other was a price comparison without intent. Offline conversion import closes this gap by reporting the later steps.

Technically, the click must be linked to the later sale. In Google Ads the classic link is the GCLID click identifier, which is attached to the URL on the visit and stored with the form in the CRM. A more modern route is Enhanced Conversions for leads, where a hashed email address or phone number serves as the link. When the lead becomes an order, the company uploads the sale with identifier, time and optionally value, manually by file, automatically through an interface or via a CRM integration.

The effect shows in how campaigns are steered. When Smart Bidding optimises for orders rather than forms, budget shifts to search terms and audiences that actually buy. Even without automated bidding the import is valuable: it shows which campaigns bring revenue and which only bring contacts. Other platforms have similar mechanisms, for example via the Conversions API at Meta or LinkedIn.

The obstacles are organisational, not technical. The identifier must reliably reach the CRM, sales must record outcomes promptly and consistently, and there must be a clear definition of what counts as a sale. Google only accepts imports within a certain window after the click; with very long sales cycles late orders drop out, and then an earlier milestone such as 'quote sent' is worth adding as a conversion. Phone enquiries also need their own solution, such as call conversions.

Which stages to report

A short chain works well: qualified lead (fits the offer), quote sent, order received, optionally with order value. Each stage is created as its own conversion action; for bid optimisation the deepest stage that still delivers enough data is usually chosen. With very few orders per month, it is better to optimise for 'qualified lead' than for the order itself. The concepts of MQL and lead scoring help with the definition.

How we connect forms, CRM and Google Ads is described on conversion tracking agency Zurich, Google Ads agency Zurich and custom CRM development.

Example: a removals company with site visits

A typical case: a removals company in Zurich receives many quote requests via Google Ads. Some are single-room moves that barely pay, others are whole houses. The form stores the GCLID in the CRM. After the site visit, the team records whether the job was won and its value. Once a week the outcomes are transferred to Google Ads automatically.

After a few weeks the reports show which search terms lead to large jobs and which bring only small requests. The campaign can be adjusted in a targeted way, for example with negative keywords for terms that regularly deliver unprofitable enquiries. Concrete improvements depend on the individual case and are not promised.

Frequently Asked Questions About Offline Conversion Import

A CRM makes it much easier but is not mandatory. A well-kept spreadsheet with identifier, date and outcome can also serve as an upload file. Once sales are reported regularly, an automated solution pays off, because manual uploads are easily forgotten.

The Google Click Identifier is a unique ID that Google Ads appends to the landing page URL when an ad is clicked. If it is stored with the enquiry, a later sale can be attributed to exactly that click. For this to work, auto-tagging must be enabled in the Google Ads account.

As promptly as possible, ideally daily or weekly. Google only accepts imports within a window after the click, and the faster the data arrives, the faster the bid strategy can react. With very long sales cycles an additional, earlier conversion stage helps.
