Conversion Tracking.

Conversion tracking measures whether a visit leads to a desired action: an enquiry, a call, a booking or a purchase. It is the basis for aligning ad budget, SEO and the website with real results rather than clicks.

Conversion Tracking — Explained in Detail

A conversion is any action that matters to the business. For an online shop it is the purchase, for a fiduciary firm the submitted contact form, for an emergency plumbing service the phone call. Conversion tracking ensures these actions are measured and attributed to the right source: which ad, which search term, which page.

Technically this happens through small measurement snippets known as tags. Google Ads has its own conversion tag, while in Google Analytics 4 the measured actions are called key events. Both are usually set up through Google Tag Manager. In addition there are enhanced conversions, which transmit hashed contact details, and the import of closed deals from the CRM when an order only materialises weeks after the enquiry.

An example: a scaffolding company has so far measured only clicks. Once tracking is set up, three things count: submitted quote requests, clicks on the phone number and clicks on the WhatsApp button. It then emerges that an expensive search term brings plenty of clicks but not a single enquiry, while a cheaper term reliably delivers enquiries. Without tracking, the budget would have kept flowing into the wrong term.

The most common mistakes: views of the thank-you page are counted twice, job applications and spam end up in the data as conversions, and calls from mobile devices are not captured at all. Because Smart Bidding optimises for exactly the measured event, faulty tracking amplifies every error. That is why a check is worthwhile before you increase the budget.
