Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's web analytics tool, which has fully replaced its predecessor Universal Analytics since July 2023. GA4 measures every interaction as an event instead of a page view and combines website and app data in one property.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) — Explained in Detail
The most important principle of GA4 is its event-based data model. A page view, a scroll to the bottom of the page, a click on a phone number, a submitted form — everything is an event with parameters. GA4 measures some events automatically; others have to be set up, usually via Google Tag Manager. Important events are marked as 'key events'; they are what used to be called goals.
Compared with Universal Analytics, reporting has changed considerably. Bounce rate was replaced by engagement rate (later reintroduced as bounce rate with the inverse logic), standard reports are leaner, and many questions can only be answered in the 'Explore' section or via Looker Studio. In addition, the standard version of GA4 keeps detailed data for at most 14 months — for year-on-year comparisons you have to set this option actively.
A key limit is consent. If a visitor declines analytics cookies, GA4 may not record them, or only to a limited extent. With Consent Mode, Google partly models the missing data, but the figures are then estimates. Anyone comparing GA4 values with data from a shop, a CRM or an ad account will therefore almost always see discrepancies.
For many SMEs, GA4 is more powerful than necessary and at the same time less meaningful than hoped. What matters is not having as many reports as possible but measuring a few events cleanly: enquiries, calls, bookings, purchases. Anyone who reliably knows just these four numbers makes better decisions than with a hundred unverified reports.
Example: setting up GA4 for a service business website
Suppose a cleaning company wants to know which channels bring in quote requests. In GA4, three key events are set up for this: submitted quote form, click on the phone number and click on the WhatsApp button. Campaign links in newsletters and on social media get UTM parameters so that they do not appear as 'direct'. Data retention is set to 14 months.
The result is a simple report: enquiries by source and landing page. That makes it possible to judge whether the Google Ads budget or a new location page is worth it. How we set up tracking in a privacy-compliant way is described on the page Conversion Tracking Agency Zurich. Anyone who does not want to use a Google tool will find the alternatives under Cookieless Tracking. Where Google Ads is involved, we link GA4 to the ad account — see Google Ads Agency Zurich.

Yes, the standard version is free. For very large data volumes and extended guarantees there is the paid version Analytics 360, which SMEs as a rule do not need.
Yes, but with transparency and, depending on your audience, with consent. The Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP/DSG) requires information about data processing; for visitors from the EU, the GDPR's consent requirement applies in addition. The specific set-up should be clarified with a data protection specialist — we handle the technical implementation but do not give legal advice.
Because the two systems count differently: different attribution models, different assignment to the click or conversion date, different handling of missing consent. Discrepancies are normal. What matters is deciding on one source for each decision.
