Conversions API (CAPI).

A Conversions API is a server-to-server interface through which a company reports events such as enquiries or purchases directly from its server to an advertising platform, rather than only via a pixel in the browser. Meta, LinkedIn and OpenAI offer such interfaces; they complement the pixel and make measurement less dependent on browser restrictions.

Conversions API (CAPI) — Explained in Detail

An advertising pixel is a script in the browser that sends events to the platform. That works as long as the browser cooperates. Ad blockers, anti-tracking features, rejected cookies or interrupted page loads mean that some events never arrive. A Conversions API works one level lower: once your own server has stored an enquiry or booked an order, it reports that event directly to the platform. The event is then confirmed, not merely assumed.

The principle became known through Meta's Conversions API (Facebook and Instagram), often shortened to CAPI. Other platforms now have their own interfaces, including LinkedIn and OpenAI for ChatGPT Ads. At Google, Enhanced Conversions and offline conversion import play a similar role. What they all share is that hashed customer data such as email or phone number, technical details such as IP address and user agent, and click identifiers are sent with the event so the platform can attribute it to an ad contact.

Because pixel and API usually run in parallel, deduplication is crucial. Both routes send the same event with the same event ID. The platform recognises the duplicate and counts the conversion only once. If the shared ID is missing or differs, conversions are counted twice and the reports show better performance than was actually achieved. This check belongs in every setup and after every change to forms.

In data protection terms, server transmission does not change the basic rules. Hashed data is still personal data; passing it to an advertising platform needs a sound basis and must be described in the privacy policy, including transfers abroad. The advantage is control: the server defines exactly which fields are sent, and nothing is passed on unnoticed. The API is often connected via server-side tagging or directly in the backend.

Events suited to the API

The most valuable events are those the server can confirm with certainty: a stored enquiry, a paid order, a booked appointment. Page views or clicks on the phone number are also possible but add less over the pixel. It is important that a lead is only reported as a lead once it has actually been stored, not on the click of 'Submit'.

For Meta campaigns see Facebook and Instagram ads, for LinkedIn the LinkedIn marketing agency, for ChatGPT Ads the page ChatGPT Ads Switzerland. The technical setup is described on conversion tracking agency Zurich.

Example: a gym with a trial session form

A constructed case: a gym advertises a trial session on Instagram. The Meta pixel reports form submissions, but some are lost to browser restrictions and occasionally an abandoned form is counted as submitted. With the Conversions API, the server reports every stored sign-up with a hashed email and the same event ID as the pixel.

Meta counts each sign-up once, the reports show confirmed rather than assumed leads, and campaign optimisation works with more complete data. How many additional events become visible varies from site to site and can only be measured after setup.

Frequently Asked Questions About Conversions API (CAPI)

Usually not. The platforms recommend running both in parallel and deduplicating via a shared event ID. The pixel provides browser signals such as page views, the API confirmed events from the server. Together they give the most complete picture.

The platform then counts the same event twice, once from the pixel and once from the API. Reports show too many conversions, cost per lead appears too low and automated optimisation learns from wrong data. That is why every event must carry the same ID on both routes.

Yes, OpenAI offers a Conversions API for ChatGPT Ads alongside a pixel. As with other platforms, customer data is transmitted hashed and matched via a shared event ID. In Europe and Switzerland the ads are not delivered in a personalised way.
