Customer Portal.
A customer portal is a protected area on a company's website where customers, after logging in, can view and manage their own data, documents, orders or requests — around the clock, without email or phone.
Customer Portal — Explained in Detail
Many customer enquiries concern information the company already has: where is my order? Could you send me the invoice again? When is the next service appointment? A customer portal makes this information available on demand. That takes pressure off the team and gives customers the feeling of being informed at all times.
Typical functions are document storage (quotes, invoices, contracts, reports), order and project status, uploads of documents by the customer, a ticket or request system, appointment booking, maintenance of master data, and notifications by email or push. Behind the portal there are usually existing systems such as a CRM or ERP, whose data is displayed through interfaces.
Security is central, because personal and business data are involved. That includes secure login, ideally with two-factor authentication or passkeys, clean separation of data between customers, encrypted transmission, logging of access and a data location that fits the requirements. A portal in which one customer can see another's documents by changing the URL is a data protection incident.
Whether a portal pays off depends on the volume of recurring enquiries and the length of the customer relationship. For a company with many one-off customers it rarely makes sense. For fiduciary firms, property management, maintenance contracts, agencies or trades businesses with service orders, on the other hand, it can save time every day and strengthen loyalty.
Example: the DLM Digital customer portal
We use a customer portal of our own for website changes. Clients report change requests there, mark the affected spot directly on their website in a visual editor and see the status of every ticket. Once a change has been made, it goes for approval: the client accepts it or reports adjustments, also via a secure link without logging in. That way it is always clear what was commissioned, implemented and approved.
We build the same principle for clients, for example as a portal for receipts, orders or service appointments. How we develop applications like these is described in web app development and custom software Switzerland. One example of operations software from our projects is Karo Kanaltechnik, with a website, a web app and an iOS app that has been built and is in testing.

That depends on scope: a portal with login and document storage is considerably simpler than one with a ticket system, appointment booking and connections to several systems. As a stand-alone web app, a customer portal is an individual software project; with us, prototypes and MVPs start from CHF 10,000, and the exact scope follows from the requirements.
Yes, if the existing software offers an interface. The portal then displays data from the CRM, ERP or accounting system without it having to be maintained twice. If there is no interface, exports or an interim solution are needed.
As secure as it is built and operated. What matters is strong login, strict separation of customer data, encryption, regular updates and logging. These points belong in the requirements from the outset, not after launch.
