Keyword Difficulty — Explained in Detail

Keyword difficulty (KD) is an estimate of how strong the competition for the organic top places of a keyword is. SEO tools usually express it as a number from 0 to 100: the higher the value, the more authoritative and established the pages already ranking, and the more effort a top position of your own will cost. It is a compass rather than a measurement, but a compass is precisely what most raw keyword lists are missing when the decision about where to start has to be made.

How the figure is calculated differs from tool to tool, but it is usually based on the strength of the domains and pages currently ranking, above all their backlink profile and authority. Treat it as orientation rather than an exact value, and always read it together with search volume, search intent and your own domain strength. Because every tool calculates differently, absolute numbers are only partly comparable; what is useful is the relative ordering within one and the same tool.

Strategically, keyword difficulty helps with prioritising. New or small websites sensibly start with keywords of low to medium difficulty, often long-tail, collect rankings, traffic and authority there, and work their way up to more contested terms afterwards. That way effort goes where it produces results within a foreseeable time frame, instead of into a fight that cannot be won on the authority currently available. The order of the work matters more than the ambition behind it.

An example. A young consultancy sees that «Unternehmensberatung» carries very high difficulty while «Nachfolgeberatung KMU Ostschweiz» sits low. Instead of taking on established players with no prospect of winning, it occupies the reachable, more specific keywords first, and builds step by step the authority the harder terms require. Two years later the same list can be reassessed, and terms that looked unrealistic then may well have moved into range in the meantime.

Frequently Asked Questions About Keyword Difficulty

The exact formula differs between SEO tools, but it is mostly based on the strength of the pages already ranking, above all their backlink profile and domain authority. The result is a value between 0 and 100. Because every tool calculates it differently, absolute figures are only partly comparable across tools; what is genuinely useful is the relative ranking inside a single tool.

That depends on your own domain strength. New or small websites should first target low to medium difficulty, often long-tail keywords, in order to rank at all and to build authority. Established, authoritative domains can take on more contested terms. In every case, difficulty should be judged together with search volume and search intent rather than on its own.
