Rank Tracking (Ranking Check).

Rank tracking is the regular measurement of the position a website holds in the search results for defined search terms, often also called a ranking check or position check. Specialised tools query the results from a particular location and device and show the development over time.

Rank Tracking (Ranking Check) — Explained in Detail

If you want to know whether SEO measures are working, you first want to know your position for the most important search terms. A simple Google search provides this information only to a limited extent, because the results depend on your own location, device, language setting and partly on your search history. Rank tracking tools solve this by querying the search results automatically under defined conditions, such as 'Google Switzerland, German, smartphone, location Winterthur', and recording the position of your own domain.

Measurement is usually daily or weekly for a fixed list of keywords. This produces trend lines that show whether a page is rising, falling or staying stable. Many tools also record which elements appear on the results page, for example a local pack, AI Overviews or question boxes, and whether your own page appears in them. For local businesses there are tools that measure the position in the local pack at many points of a grid across a town, because it can change just a few streets away.

Rank tracking measures a sample, not the whole. The average position in Google Search Console, by contrast, is based on all real impressions for real users. The two values therefore often differ: a tool reports position 3 from Zurich, Search Console an average of 6, because searchers in other places see the page further down. Neither value is wrong; they answer different questions.

Rankings are also an intermediate metric. Position 1 for a term without demand or buying intent brings nothing. Rank tracking makes sense for a manageable list of terms that are demonstrably searched for and matter to the business, supplemented by clicks and enquiries as the actual measures of success.

What matters in measurement

First, identical conditions: search engine, country, language, device and location must be the same for every measurement, otherwise you are comparing apples with oranges. Second, the right keyword list: a few evidenced terms with buying intent rather than hundreds of variants. Third, putting fluctuations in context: movement of one or two places is normal and no reason to act.

The same principle applies to AI answers in a different form. Instead of a position, what is measured is whether a company is named for defined questions. Here too, the questions, language and location reference must stay the same every month for the values to be comparable.

Example: a painting business measures its service area

A painting business in Wetzikon wants to know where it stands for 'painter Wetzikon', 'painter Hinwil' and 'façade painting Zurich Oberland'. A single search from the office shows position 1 in the local pack, because the office is right next door. Measuring at several points in the service area, however, shows that in Hinwil and Bubikon the business does not appear in the local pack at all.

The measures start there: projects from Hinwil on the website, a complete service area in the business profile, reviews from customers in these places. Position measurements of this kind are part of local SEO management; the free SEO check gives an initial assessment of your own website.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rank Tracking (Ranking Check)

Google Search Console shows the average position of your pages for all queries they appeared for, free of charge. A search in a private browser window helps for a snapshot. Paid rank tracking tools offer reliable daily measurements for fixed keywords and locations.

The rank tracker measures under fixed conditions in one location; Search Console shows the average of all real impressions across all locations and devices. Both values are correct, but they answer different questions.

For an SME, 10 to 30 terms with evidenced demand and buying intent are usually enough. More terms mainly produce more data, not more insight.
