Favicon.
A favicon is the small icon that represents a website in the browser tab, in bookmarks, on a smartphone's home screen and next to the site name in Google's mobile search results. Technically it is an image file (ICO, PNG or SVG) linked in the HTML head of the page.
Favicon — Explained in Detail
The name comes from 'favourite icon': originally the icon only appeared in Internet Explorer's list of favourites. Today it shows up in many more places: in the browser tab, in the history list, as an app icon when someone adds the website to the iPhone home screen, and on smartphones directly next to the result in Google search. That makes the favicon one of the few brand elements someone sees before they have even opened the website.
Technically, a clean favicon set today consists of a few files: a favicon.ico for older browsers and tools, an SVG or PNG version for modern browsers, an apple-touch-icon of 180 × 180 pixels for iOS and icons for the web app manifest (typically 192 and 512 pixels). They are linked in the head section of the page or, with frameworks such as Next.js, via convention files in the app directory. For Google search, according to Google's documentation, the favicon must be square, have a side length that is a multiple of 48 pixels and be fetchable by Googlebot.
In design terms, the favicon is a task of its own, not a scaled-down copy of the logo. A word-and-figure mark with company name and tagline becomes a grey smudge at 16 pixels. A reduced symbol works better: a letter, a shape or the logo's figurative mark, with enough contrast on light and dark backgrounds. iOS adds a particularity: the system rounds the corners itself and fills transparent areas with black, so app icons for the home screen should be created edge to edge and without transparency.
What counts most for the effect is consistency. A missing favicon shows a generic globe icon in the tab and a placeholder in mobile search; both look unfinished. A favicon that does not match the rest of the corporate design gives away recognition exactly where twenty tabs are open side by side. The effort is small, so it belongs on the acceptance checklist of every project.
Which favicon files a website needs in 2026
A lean, complete set comprises: favicon.ico (32 × 32, for older browsers and feed readers), icon.svg or icon.png (for modern browsers; SVG stays sharp at any size), apple-touch-icon.png (180 × 180, without transparency) and two manifest icons at 192 and 512 pixels if the site is to serve as an installable progressive web app. More variants are usually ballast from old generators.
Checking after launch is important: load the favicon in a private window, add the site to the home screen on iPhone and Android, and request a fresh inspection of the home page in Google Search Console. Google does not update the favicon in the search results immediately, but at the next crawl of the home page.
Example: a favicon for a joinery with a long company name
A joinery with the logo 'Muster Holzbau & Innenausbau AG' and a drawn saw next to it has the logo uploaded as a favicon. At 16 pixels, only a brown bar can be seen. The solution: the favicon shows only the saw, as a solid shape in the brand colour, on a light square. For the home screen, an edge-to-edge variant with the brand colour as the background is created. The company name appears next to it anyway, in the tab title and in the search result.

Favicon: alle Grössen für WebsitesFrequently Asked Questions About Favicon
There is no single size. Common sizes are 32 × 32 pixels for favicon.ico, 180 × 180 for the apple-touch-icon and 192 and 512 pixels for the web app manifest. For display in search, Google requires a square image with a side length that is a multiple of 48 pixels. An SVG file covers modern browsers at any size.
Common reasons: the file is not square or too small, it is blocked by robots.txt, the link in the HTML head is missing on the home page, or Google has not yet recrawled the home page since the change. If everything is correct, a new indexing request for the home page in Search Console helps.
Only if it is still legible at 16 to 32 pixels. With word-and-figure marks, almost always only the figurative mark or an initial letter works. The favicon is a separate, reduced derivative of the logo.
