Domain.

A domain is the unique name of a website on the internet, such as example.ch. It consists of the freely chosen name (second-level domain) and the ending (top-level domain such as .ch, .swiss or .com), and is registered with a registrar for an annual fee.

Domain — Explained in Detail

A domain is read from right to left. On the far right is the top-level domain (TLD): country-specific such as .ch, .li or .de, generic such as .com or .org, or thematic and geographic such as .swiss or .zuerich. To its left is the actual name, the second-level domain. Anything in front of that is a subdomain: www.example.ch, shop.example.ch and app.example.ch are three subdomains of the same domain and can point to entirely different systems.

For .ch and .li domains the SWITCH foundation is the registry, meaning the body that keeps the central directory. Registration, however, goes through a registrar — a provider with whom you order, pay for and manage the domain. A domain is not bought but rented for one year at a time, and it renews as long as the fee is paid. If it lapses, it becomes free again after a grace period — and can be registered by someone else.

The most important point for SMEs is the holder. Whoever is entered in the register as holder legally owns the domain. If the agency, the web designer or a former employee is entered there, the entire online presence, email included, depends on a person outside the company. With every registration the company itself should be the holder, with a working company address as the contact; the agency can be entered as the technical contact.

When choosing a name, memorability and clarity count for more than keywords. A domain such as best-plumber-zurich.ch brings hardly any ranking advantage and looks generic. The sensible choice is usually the company name with .ch, plus the most important typo or hyphen variants, which point to the main domain via a 301 redirect. A .com is worth having if the business is international or competitors would otherwise take it.

Registering a domain: checklist for SMEs

Check availability, secure the company name as .ch, enter the company as holder, switch on automatic renewal, store the registrar login inside the company and give two people access. Part of this is deciding where DNS is managed — that is described in the entry DNS.

When we build a website, the domain always stays with the client. The same applies to the code and the accounts — the question of who actually owns a website deserves a clear answer in every contract.

Example: the domain held by the former web designer

A painting and decorating business wants its website rebuilt. The review shows that the domain holder is the former web designer, who can no longer be reached. The website still runs because the fee is still being paid automatically. Before the relaunch, a change of holder has to be initiated via the registrar and, if necessary, via SWITCH — with evidence such as a commercial register extract and earlier invoices. That costs weeks that a correctly registered holder would have made unnecessary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Domain

The annual fee is set by the registrar; it varies by provider and ending, and premium names and endings such as .swiss cost more. Compared with the other costs of a website it is small. What matters more than the price is that the holder and renewal are set up correctly.

The domain is only the name and the address. The website is the content that sits on a server. DNS determines which server the domain points to. You can change the website and keep the domain.

For a Swiss SME working locally, .ch is the right main domain. A .com is worthwhile with international customers or if the name could otherwise be used by third parties. Additional domains redirect to the main domain via 301.
