Visibility Index.
A visibility index is a metric from SEO tools that estimates how present a domain is in the organic search results. It is calculated from the domain's positions for a fixed selection of keywords, weighted by search volume and click probability. The best known is the Sistrix Visibility Index.
Visibility Index — Explained in Detail
The visibility index answers a question that Search Console data cannot: how visible is someone else's domain, such as a competitor's? To do this, tool providers regularly query the rankings for a large, fixed set of keywords. Each position is weighted by the keyword's estimated search volume and an assumed click-through rate for the position; the sum gives the index value.
The best-known value in German-speaking markets is the Sistrix Visibility Index, which is calculated weekly and in some cases daily for various countries, including Switzerland. Other tools such as SEMrush or Ahrefs offer similar metrics under other names, such as estimated organic traffic. The values from different tools are not comparable, because each tool uses different keywords, volumes and click assumptions.
The index's strength lies in comparison over time and with competitors. A sudden crash after a core update or a steady rise after a relaunch become visible. It also lets you estimate how visibility is distributed between competitors. For large websites with many keywords, it is a useful trend indicator.
For small SME websites, the index is often not very meaningful. The fixed keyword sets frequently do not contain the specific, local queries of small businesses at all. A painting business that is in position 1 for 'painter Dübendorf' can have a visibility index close to zero. In addition, the values are based on estimated search volumes, which are sometimes considerably too high for Switzerland. For your own website, the measurements from Google Search Console are therefore always preferable.
Reading the visibility index correctly
The absolute value can hardly be interpreted; what is meaningful is the trend. Doubling does not mean twice as many visitors, but that the domain ranks considerably better overall for the keywords measured. Spikes should always be checked against the specific keywords behind them: often a single high-volume keyword changes the index sharply without anything changing for the business.
In honest SEO reporting, the visibility index therefore appears at most as a supplementary estimate alongside the measurements from Search Console, never in their place.
Example: competitor comparison for a fiduciary firm
A fiduciary firm in Zurich wants to know which competitors are strong in search. The visibility index shows that two large fiduciary chains with many guide pages are clearly ahead, while the firm's own visibility is barely measurable. Search Console, however, shows that the firm is already on the first page for its local core terms.
The conclusion: the gap lies in broad informational topics, not in queries with buying intent. Whether expanding is worthwhile is decided by a competitor analysis with realistic volumes. We built such comparisons for our German-language data study on agencies in Zurich; implementation is handled by our SEO agency in Zurich.

Organic TrafficFrequently Asked Questions About Visibility Index
A tool queries a domain's rankings for a fixed set of keywords and weights each position by the estimated search volume and an assumed click-through rate. The sum gives the index. Details and keyword sets differ between providers.
No. The index measures presence for a fixed keyword set, not visitors or enquiries. A website can rank excellently for a few local terms with strong buying intent and still have a low index.
For your own website, the free Google Search Console is usually enough. A tool with a visibility index is mainly worthwhile for competitor comparisons, larger websites or when you want to observe trends across many domains.
