SEO Reporting.
SEO reporting is the regular, transparent evaluation of how a website's visibility in search engines is developing and what the measures implemented have achieved. Good reporting shows a few business-relevant metrics such as clicks, enquiries and visibility for core terms, explains changes and names the next steps.
SEO Reporting — Explained in Detail
SEO reporting should answer a simple question: is the work worthwhile? That requires figures connected to the business. The most important source is Google Search Console with clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position per page and query. Added to that are enquiries and calls from website analytics, for local businesses the figures from the Google Business Profile and, increasingly, presence in AI answers.
Comparison is what matters. A figure on its own says little; only comparison with the previous month, the same month last year or an equally long period before a measure makes a development visible. Seasonal industries such as landscaping or tax advice need the year-on-year comparison, because a decline in December says nothing about the quality of the work.
A common problem is reporting designed mainly to impress: dozens of charts, visibility indices without explanation, rankings for terms with no demand. Honest reporting also shows what did not work and explains why. It separates measurements (from Search Console) from estimates (from tools such as the visibility index) and always states the period and the source.
For AI visibility there is not yet a Search Console in the classic sense. What can be measured is whether a company is named for defined questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews. For these values to remain comparable, the questions, language and location reference must stay the same every month.
These metrics belong in an SME report
Organic clicks and impressions overall and for the most important pages; click-through rate of the pages already on the first results page; enquiries, calls and WhatsApp contacts from organic search; views, route requests and calls from the Google Business Profile; number and average of new reviews; for GEO: mentions in AI answers for the defined questions.
In addition: a short list of the measures implemented and the planned next steps. Rarely is more needed. Anything that cannot be explained in three sentences belongs in a conversation, not in a chart.
Example: a restaurant's monthly report
Suppose an Italian restaurant in Zurich-Wiedikon receives one page every month: how many people saw the Google profile, how many called or planned a route, how many reservations came via the website, which new reviews were there, and was the restaurant named in AI answers for questions such as 'pizzeria in Wiedikon with a terrace'? Next to them are the values for the previous month and the same month last year.
The commentary states what has changed and why: new lunch menu online, three new photos in the profile, replies to all reviews. With us, reporting of this kind is part of SEO management and GEO management with a monthly report.

For most SMEs a monthly report is enough. Shorter intervals mainly show random fluctuations. After a relaunch or a sudden drop, temporary weekly or daily monitoring is worthwhile.
No. Rankings fluctuate, depend on location and device, and say nothing about enquiries. Clicks, enquiries and visibility for terms with genuine buying intent are more important.
Google Search Console is essential and free. Added to it are website analytics for enquiries and, for local businesses, the Google Business Profile. Paid SEO tools add competitor data but provide estimates, not measurements.
