Online Reputation Management.

Online reputation management covers everything a company does to monitor and influence how it is perceived on the internet: in reviews, search results, social media, press coverage and, increasingly, in the answers of AI assistants. In French-speaking Switzerland the term e-reputation is common.

Online Reputation Management — Explained in Detail

Anyone vetting a supplier today searches for its name first. What appears then shapes the first impression: the company's own website, its Google Business Profile with reviews, directory listings, press articles, forum posts. Since language models such as ChatGPT or Gemini started answering questions directly, a further layer has been added: what does the AI say when someone asks about your company, or about providers in your industry? Those answers draw on exactly the same sources.

Good reputation management has three parts. Monitoring: checking regularly what appears about your company, for instance with a search for the company name, alerts for new reviews and the occasional question to an AI assistant. Responding: replying to reviews, factually and promptly, and especially to negative ones. Building: making sure enough accurate information of your own exists around your name, such as a facts page, complete profiles and consistent details in directories.

What does not work is suppression. Negative reviews can only be removed if they breach the platform's policies, for example in the case of insults or where there has demonstrably been no customer contact. Anyone who invents or buys positive reviews instead risks the platform blocking reviews or the entire profile. And a good reply to a bad review often convinces prospective customers reading along more than ten positive ones.

The foundation of any good reputation remains the work itself. Reputation management can make sure that good work becomes visible and that mistakes are put into fair context. It cannot make bad work look good.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Reputation Management

Monitoring and deliberately shaping what is said about a company online: reviews, search results, profiles, press coverage and the answers of AI assistants.

Only if they breach Google's policies, for example insults, spam or no actual customer contact. The Business Profile has a reporting function for this. Legitimate criticism stays up; there, a factual reply is what helps.

AI assistants answer questions about providers from publicly available sources such as websites, reviews and directories. If you keep accurate and complete details there, you will also be portrayed more accurately in AI answers.
