Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram Advertising).

Meta Ads are paid ads on the platforms of the Meta group, above all Facebook and Instagram, managed in Meta Ads Manager. Unlike search ads, they do not reach people through a search query but through interests, behaviour and similarity to existing customers.

Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram Advertising) — Explained in Detail

Meta Ads are set up in Ads Manager and can appear on Facebook, Instagram, in Messenger and in Meta's Audience Network. A campaign has three levels: the campaign with its objective (awareness, traffic, leads, sales), the ad set with audience, budget and placement, and the ad itself with image, video or carousel. Increasingly, Meta's automation takes over the choice of audience and placement, much like Performance Max at Google.

The fundamental difference from search ads lies in intent. Someone searching on Google has a problem and is looking for a solution. Someone scrolling through Instagram is not looking for anything. Meta Ads therefore create demand rather than capture it. That suits offers you see and understand immediately — restaurants, fashion, events, consumer goods — and suits services less well that are only needed once a specific problem arises.

Measurement runs through the Meta Pixel on the website and, increasingly, through the Conversions API, which passes events directly from the server to Meta. Since Apple introduced App Tracking Transparency in 2021 and many users decline cookies, the Pixel on its own misses large parts of the data. Without server-side transmission and clean cookie consent, Meta campaigns can today only be steered to a limited extent.

Creative design carries more weight at Meta than at Google. The ad has to stand out in the feed within a second, work on a phone and be understandable without sound. Campaigns also wear out: if the same audience sees the same ad too often, its effect drops. Anyone running Meta Ads therefore needs a plan for regularly refreshed creatives.

Example: Meta Ads for a restaurant

Suppose a restaurant in Zurich-Wiedikon launches a new lunch menu. A Search campaign would hardly work, because nobody searches for a menu they do not yet know. A Meta campaign with short videos of the dishes, shown to people within a few kilometres during the week, can on the other hand create attention. The goal is a reservation or a click on the directions.

To measure whether the campaign brings in guests, the website needs a reservation system whose completion is reported back to Meta as a conversion. How such a system is built is shown under Restaurant Booking System. An honest note: for social media advertising we have no named reference with figures. Which channels make sense for your budget is something we clarify in our digital marketing consulting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram Advertising)

They solve different tasks. Google Ads captures existing demand; Meta Ads create new demand. For emergency and search-driven services, Google is usually the first choice; for visual products, restaurants and events it is often Meta. Many companies use both, with separate goals and separate reporting.

The Conversions API sends events such as purchases or enquiries directly from the company's server to Meta, rather than via a script in the browser. This means less data is lost to ad blockers and browser restrictions. Users' consent must still be respected.

To a limited extent. Meta knows interests but has no reliable job information. For B2B with a clear audience by job function or industry, LinkedIn Ads are more precise, but considerably more expensive per contact.
