Internal Linking.

Internal linking means linking pages within the same website. Internal links guide users through the site, distribute ranking signals to important pages and help search engines understand structure and topical relationships.

Internal Linking — Explained in Detail

Internal linking covers every link that leads from one page of a website to another page of the same site. Unlike backlinks, these links are entirely in your own hands, which makes them one of the most underrated and at the same time most accessible SEO levers there is. No outreach, no negotiation, no waiting for somebody else to agree: the whole thing is an editorial decision you can take today and revise tomorrow, on a site of five pages or five hundred.

Internal links do three jobs. They lead users to further content and so reduce bounce, they pass link equity from strong pages to important but weaker ones, and through anchor text and linking patterns they show Google which pages belong together topically and which ones matter most. The more internal links a page receives, the more importance is signalled for it. The third job is the one most often forgotten, because it works quietly and only becomes visible across the site as a whole.

Good practice: descriptive, keyword-bearing anchor text instead of «click here»; deliberate links from strong pages to strategically important targets; a flat structure in which important pages are reachable within a few clicks; and no orphan pages left without a single incoming internal link. Content clusters and breadcrumbs are systematic forms of internal linking, the first organising links by topic and the second by hierarchy. Both are worth setting up once, rather than improvising link by link as articles are published.

An example. A blog article about loading times that links internally to the «web performance» service page and to related glossary entries such as Core Web Vitals and LCP keeps readers on the site for longer, strengthens the target pages in the rankings and makes the topical proximity of those pages obvious to Google. Three links, written while the article was being drafted, doing work that no amount of external link building would achieve as quickly or as cheaply.

Frequently Asked Questions About Internal Linking

There is no fixed upper limit, but the links should be useful to the reader rather than scattered at random. Important target pages may well be linked from several suitable pages, because a high number of internal links signals their importance. What decides the matter is relevance: every link should fit the topic of its context and offer the reader a genuine next step.

Orphan pages are pages that no internal link points to. Google finds them at best through the sitemap and with difficulty, users effectively not at all, and they usually rank accordingly badly. Solid internal linking makes sure every important page is reachable through at least one topically appropriate internal link, which is also the cheapest fix available in technical SEO.
