Google Fonts.
Google Fonts is a free library of open-source typefaces that can be used on websites. The fonts can either be loaded directly from Google's servers or downloaded and self-hosted — a difference that matters for loading speed and data protection.
Google Fonts — Explained in Detail
Google Fonts comprises more than a thousand font families under open licences that may also be used commercially free of charge. Well-known examples are Inter, Roboto, Open Sans, Montserrat and Playfair Display. For many websites they are the obvious choice: good quality, broad language support, no licence fees.
The classic embed loads the fonts from Google's servers on every page view. In the process, the visitor's IP address is transmitted to Google. In Germany, the Regional Court of Munich ruled in 2022 that this was a breach of data protection, because the transfer took place without consent and without necessity; a wave of warning letters followed. No comparable ruling is known in Switzerland, but the DSG also requires transparency about disclosures to third parties. The simplest solution is to self-host the fonts — then no data flows to Google.
Self-hosting is technically better too. The font files come from your own server or CDN, there is no additional connection to a third-party server, and you control caching and preloading. Frameworks such as Next.js download Google Fonts automatically at build time and serve them locally. For WordPress and other systems there are plugins or theme settings that take care of this.
For loading speed, what counts is how many styles are loaded. Every combination of weight and style is a separate file. Variable fonts combine many weights in one file; subsetting removes characters that are not needed. With font-display: swap and suitable fallback fonts, text appears immediately without the page jumping when the font loads — good for Cumulative Layout Shift.
How to check whether your website loads Google Fonts externally
Open the website in your browser, start the developer tools (F12), select the 'Network' tab and reload the page. If requests to fonts.googleapis.com or fonts.gstatic.com appear, the fonts are being loaded from Google. Common sources are the theme, a page builder, embedded maps or plugins that bring their own fonts.
Example: fonts served locally instead of from Google
A law firm uses a WordPress theme that loads four styles of two Google fonts externally, plus another font from a slider plugin. After the switch, only two variable font files remain on its own server, the unneeded font is gone, and Google Fonts no longer has to be mentioned in the privacy policy. The site also loads slightly faster, because one external connection is no longer needed.
On the websites we build, fonts are always embedded locally — see web design Zurich. We check existing sites in our website audit.

Yes, the fonts themselves may be used freely. The question concerns only how they are embedded: loading them from Google's servers transmits the IP address, which must be disclosed in the privacy policy. When self-hosted, the question does not arise.
Download the font files, store them in WOFF2 format on your own server and include them via CSS with @font-face. Many frameworks, themes and plugins do this automatically.
Not necessarily, but every additional font file costs loading time. Few styles, variable fonts, local hosting and font-display: swap keep the impact small.
