Conversational Advertising.
Conversational advertising is advertising that appears in a dialogue-based interface rather than in a list of results or on a web page. The ad space sits in the course of the conversation, and selection is based on the situation of the current conversation rather than on a typed search query. Since 1 September 2026, ChatGPT Ads have been the most tangible example of this category in Switzerland. The term describes the category, not a single product.
Conversational Advertising — Explained in Detail
The category is older than today's AI assistants: advertising in messaging services and sponsored placements in chatbots belong to it too. What is new is the environment. In an assistant that answers a question completely, there is no list of ten alternatives among which the ad competes for attention; there is one answer and, clearly separated below it, a placement. That changes the role of advertising: it no longer comes before the answer but after it, and must therefore offer a next step rather than information that has already been delivered.
Three features distinguish the category from the classic search ad. First, the signal basis: there is no search query as a string of characters but a conversation, which is why targeting works through descriptions of situations; with ChatGPT Ads, through context hints. Second, the separation of content and advertising: with ChatGPT Ads, according to OpenAI, ad selection and answer generation run separately, and the ad does not influence the answer. Third, the data situation in Europe: in Switzerland, selection relies on signals from the current session, not on behavioural profiles.
An example of the difference in thinking: a search ad for 'have my tax return done' may try to answer the question itself; it competes with organic results that promise the same. In an assistant, the person already has the answer in front of them; after reading it they know roughly how a tax return is structured. What makes sense at this point is not the same information again, but an offer to take over the remaining effort. The ad that works as a summary loses; the one that offers an action has a chance.
What can be said about the effectiveness of this category is limited as of 11 October 2026. For Switzerland there are no published click, contact or conversion figures, and the only widely available channel only launched on 1 September 2026. Anyone comparing conversational advertising with established channels in this situation is working with assumptions. So far, only the description of the mechanics is reliable. For Swiss SMEs this means the channel is an experiment with a limited budget alongside existing measures, not a replacement for search ads or for organic visibility in AI answers, which is where GEO work comes in.

ChatGPT Ads oder Google Ads? Der Vergleich für Schweizer KMUFrequently Asked Questions About Conversational Advertising
No. Conversational advertising is the generic term for advertising in dialogue-based interfaces and also covers placements in messaging services and chatbots. ChatGPT Ads are a specific product within this category; for Swiss advertisers, the most tangible one since 1 September 2026, because it is openly available here. The generic term says something about the environment, not about the booking routes, prices or reach of any single provider.
They answer different questions. Generative engine optimisation aims for a company to appear and be cited in a language model's answer; that is organic work on content and evidence. Conversational advertising buys a labelled placement next to or below that answer. With ChatGPT Ads, according to OpenAI, ad selection and answer generation run separately. Whether and how paid placements affect how often a company is cited organically has not been demonstrated; any statement about it would be speculation.
As of 11 October 2026 this cannot be answered generally in a sound way, because reliable Swiss experience is lacking, with us as with everyone else. It makes more sense to ask the question the other way round: are there conversations in which your own offer would be an obvious fit, is the landing page suitable for them, and is conversion measurement clean enough for the result to be judged at all? Where these three points are in place, a limited test is justifiable. Where they are not, building them first achieves more than any media budget.
