SERP (Search Engine Results Page).

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page — the page a search engine returns after a query. Modern SERPs hold far more than the classic blue links: ads, featured snippets, the Local Pack, images and AI-generated answers.

SERP (Search Engine Results Page) — Explained in Detail

SERP (Search Engine Results Page) is the results page a search engine returns in response to a query. What was once a plain list of blue links is now a complex, dynamic surface whose layout differs sharply depending on search intent. Two queries typed one after the other can produce pages that share almost no structural element, because Google assembles the layout around what it believes the searcher wants — to buy something, to learn something, to find a place nearby, or simply to navigate to a site it already knows.

A modern Google SERP can hold many elements: paid ads at the top and bottom, organic results, featured snippets, the Local Pack with its map, image and video carousels, People Also Ask boxes, knowledge panels, shopping results and, increasingly, AI-generated answers (AI Overviews). Each of these pushes the classic organic links further down the page. On a mobile screen, organic position three can sit well below the first viewport — which is why a rank number on its own says very little about actual visibility.

For SEO practice this means ranking position alone is no longer the whole story. What counts is visibility across the interplay of all SERP features — and whether anyone still clicks at all, which is the zero-click question. Understanding which features appear for your target keywords lets you aim content deliberately: at featured snippets, at the Local Pack, or at image results. Looking at the actual SERP before writing a page is faster than optimising a page for a layout that does not exist.

An example: the query 'pizzeria Zurich' returns a very different SERP from 'what is SEO?'. The first shows a Local Pack with a map and ratings; the second is more likely to show a featured snippet and an AI answer. A sensible SEO strategy takes its cue from how the SERP is actually built for its own keywords, not from a general template. Two minutes of looking often changes the format of the page you were about to commission.

Frequently Asked Questions About SERP (Search Engine Results Page)

SERP features are all the elements of a results page that go beyond the classic blue links: featured snippets, the Local Pack, image and video carousels, People Also Ask, knowledge panels, shopping results, ads and AI answers. They determine how visible a result really is — and whether users click through or find their answer directly on the SERP without ever leaving Google.

Google personalises and contextualises results. Location, search history, device, language and time of day all influence which results and features appear, so the same query can return different SERPs for two people sitting in the same room. For serious rank tracking you therefore use location-defined, de-personalised measurements rather than your own browser — otherwise you are measuring your own history.
