Conversion.

A conversion is a predefined, valuable action by a website visitor — for example an enquiry, a purchase, a booking or a call. Each company decides for itself what counts as a conversion; all reports and automated bid strategies depend on that decision.

Conversion — Explained in Detail

The word conversion means transformation: a visitor becomes a prospect, a customer or a subscriber. In web analytics and ad accounts, a conversion is a technically measurable event that stands for this transformation. The share of visits that lead to a conversion is the conversion rate. The cost of it is described by CPA.

A distinction is made between macro and micro conversions. Macro conversions are the actual business goals: purchase, quote request, appointment booking. Micro conversions are intermediate steps that indicate interest: a click on the phone number, downloading a price list, watching a product video. Micro conversions are useful for spotting early whether a page works — but they must never be lumped together with the actual goals.

This very mistake is common in practice. If a Google Ads account counts every view of the contact page as a conversion, it reports brilliant figures, and the automated bid strategy optimises for visits instead of enquiries. A clean definition specifies which events count as primary conversions for steering and which are merely observed. This separation can be configured in Google Ads, Meta and GA4.

Many conversions do not happen on the website: a call, a visit to the shop, a confirmation by email. Such offline conversions can be fed back into the advertising systems, for example by reporting from the CRM which enquiry became a job. That takes more effort but provides the most honest basis for budget decisions.

Example: defining conversions for a trade business

Suppose an electrician gets jobs through three channels: contact form, phone call and WhatsApp. He defines the submitted form and the click on the phone number on mobile as primary conversions. Opening the 'Prices' page and downloading the e-mobility checklist count as micro conversions that are only observed.

Once a month, the CRM records which enquiries became jobs. After a few months this shows which channel brings in not just enquiries but revenue. The technical implementation is described under Conversion Tracking Agency Zurich, improving the pages themselves under Conversion Rate Optimisation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Conversion

The conversion is the individual action, such as an enquiry. The conversion rate is the share of visits or clicks that lead to a conversion. Ten enquiries from 500 visits give a conversion rate of 2 per cent.

Yes, if it is defined and measured as one. On websites, what is usually measurable is the click on the phone number, not the actual conversation. Real call data requires call tracking or manual recording in the CRM.

As few as possible as primary conversions — usually one to three. Further events can be observed but should not influence bid management. Too many equally weighted conversions dilute the meaning.
