Coding Agent.

A coding agent is an AI system that works on software autonomously: it reads a project's code, plans changes, writes and edits files, runs commands and tests, and corrects itself based on the results. Well-known examples are Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and the agent modes in development environments such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot.

Coding Agent — Explained in Detail

Early AI coding aids completed single lines, much like word suggestions on a phone. A coding agent goes further. It receives a task such as 'Add a phone field to the contact form and store it in the database', finds the affected files itself, edits them, runs the tests, reads error messages and improves its code until the task is done. Technically it is a large language model with tools, see tool calling: reading files, writing files, running commands in the terminal.

Coding agents run in different environments. Some work in the terminal directly on the developer's machine, others inside the IDE, others again in an isolated cloud environment where they submit changes as a pull request on GitHub. What they need to know about a project they read from project files such as CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md, recurring procedures from agent skills. Running several agents in parallel is possible with Git worktrees without them overwriting each other's files.

The benefit is real but not magic. Agents are strong at clearly defined tasks in well-structured projects: fixing bugs, writing tests, adding features following a pattern, refactoring. They are weaker with unclear requirements, architecture decisions and anything needing domain knowledge outside the code. They can hallucinate, invent libraries or adjust tests so they pass instead of fixing the bug. Hence the rule: every change is read by a human, and automated tests such as end-to-end tests are mandatory.

An important distinction concerns vibe coding. In vibe coding you let the AI get on with it without understanding the code in detail, often fine for prototypes. Professional use of coding agents means clear tasks, project rules, code review, tests and version control with Git. Security matters too, because an agent with terminal access can also cause damage. It should work only with the permissions it needs and never have access to production secrets it does not need to know.

How a coding agent works through a task

The process is usually a loop: understand the task, search the code, make a plan, edit files, run checks (type checking, linter, tests), evaluate the result, refine. Good agents ask when the task is unclear and finish with a summary listing all changed files. The better documented and tested a project is, the more reliable the result.

We use coding agents in our own projects, always with review and tests. What that looks like for client projects is described on AI-assisted development, vibe coding agency and web app development.

Example: a physiotherapy practice with its own booking tool

A constructed example: a physiotherapy practice in Lucerne has a small web app of its own for appointment requests. The practice would like patients to choose the type of therapy when they request an appointment. The developer gives the coding agent the task of adding a selection field, storing it in the database and showing it in the overview.

The agent finds the form, the database schema and the overview, proposes a change, adds a test and runs it. The developer reviews the change, notices that the database change has to be applied to production separately and additively, and adjusts accordingly. The agent did the legwork; responsibility for going live stays with the human.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coding Agent

No. They take over part of the writing and speed up clearly defined tasks. Clarifying requirements, deciding on architecture, reviewing code and taking responsibility for security and operations remain the job of people with expertise.

A coding agent is a tool. Vibe coding is a way of working in which you let the AI get on with it without checking the code closely. Coding agents can also be used in a strictly professional way: with project rules, code review, tests and version control.

It should only receive the permissions it needs for its task. As a rule it works on a copy of the code or in an isolated environment, and changes only reach production after review and through the normal process.
