AI Slop.
AI slop describes AI content produced in bulk without care or substance: interchangeable texts, generic images and websites that all look the same. In web design the term refers to the typical uniform look that AI tools deliver when given no clear direction.
AI Slop — Explained in Detail
The term became popular from 2024 onwards, when AI-generated images and texts began to fill search results and social networks. 'Slop' is waste or mush, something produced in volume with nobody paying attention to quality. It does not mean every piece of AI content, only the careless kind: texts that say a lot and claim nothing, images with six fingers, articles that merely rephrase existing articles. For search engines this is not a new problem; Google has long rated such content as unhelpful, regardless of who created it.
In web design AI slop has a recognisable face. Ask a language model to build a landing page without guidance and you often get the same thing: purple-blue gradients, a centred headline with one word in a gradient, three equally sized cards with icons, the same default font everywhere, emojis as icons and phrases like 'We revolutionise your business'. None of it is wrong, but it is interchangeable. Because many tools are trained on similar data, they arrive at the same average solutions.
One thing helps above all: constraints. A design system with fixed design tokens, deliberately chosen typography, real photos instead of stock motifs and copy with concrete statements give an AI tool a frame. Dedicated design skills are emerging on GitHub for this purpose (see agent skill); they forbid a coding agent from using typical slop patterns and push it towards distinct decisions.
For SMEs, AI slop is primarily a brand problem. A website that looks like a thousand others builds no trust and is not remembered. Copy without first-hand experience and evidence gives neither Google nor AI search engines a reason to cite this particular page, see information gain. AI tools are therefore not forbidden, but they belong in the hands of people who know what the result should look like and who check it before it goes live.
Typical signs of AI slop in web design
Visually: purple and blue gradients, glass effects without purpose, equal cards in rows of three, emojis or generic line icons as the only imagery, lots of white space without hierarchy, and stock or AI images of smiling people in front of laptops. In terms of content: headlines like 'The future starts now', lists of three benefits that fit any company, invented figures and testimonials without names.
The alternative is pages with a real signature: a typeface that suits the brand, photos from your own business, copy with figures you can back up, and a structure built around customers' questions. How we do this is shown on web design Zurich and UX agency Zurich. If you use AI in the build process, the basics are on build a website with AI.
Example: a joinery and its AI draft
A constructed example: a joinery in the Zurich Oberland has an AI tool create a website draft. The result is a dark page with a purple gradient, the slogan 'Craftsmanship reimagined', three cards with hammer, star and heart emojis and a stock photo of a workshop that is not theirs. The draft is ready in minutes and looks like the site of a software start-up.
On the second attempt the tool gets constraints: colours from the logo, a sturdy serif for headings, photos of the actual workshop and finished kitchens, copy with concrete details on wood species, process and service area. The result is less spectacular but unmistakable and credible to regional customers. The difference lies not in the tool but in the brief.

Web design ZurichFrequently Asked Questions About AI Slop
No. AI slop means content produced in volume without care, review or substance. AI-assisted texts and designs created by people with clear constraints, reviewed and enriched with real experience, do not fall into that category.
Google judges content by usefulness, not by how it was made. However, mass-produced pages without added value violate the policies on spam and scaled content and can lose visibility. What matters is whether a page answers questions better than others.
With clear constraints and review: a design system with its own typeface and colours, real photos, copy with verifiable statements and a person who critically checks every result before it goes live. For coding agents, design skills that rule out typical patterns also help.
