NAP (Name, Address, Phone) — Explained in Detail

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone Number — the three fundamental contact details of a business. In local SEO, NAP consistency is an important ranking factor: Google compares the NAP data on your website with those in your Google Business Profile, in local directories and on other websites that mention your business. Discrepancies and inconsistencies are evaluated as a trust signal weakness.

What does NAP consistency mean in practice? The business name must be written identically everywhere (e.g. always 'DLM Digital AG' — not sometimes 'DLM Digital', sometimes 'DLM Digital Agency'). The address must use the same spelling (Street or St., abbreviations consistent). The phone number must always be in the same format (e.g. always +41 44 123 45 67 — not sometimes 044 123 45 67). The website URL must also be consistent (with or without 'www').

NAP data is also implemented as structured data (JSON-LD, LocalBusiness Schema) on the website — which reinforces the signal for Google. For Swiss businesses, important directories include: local.ch, search.ch, firmen.ch, Monsterio and industry-specific portals. A NAP audit checks all listings for consistency and corrects discrepancies. This is one of the most fundamental local SEO measures.

Frequently Asked Questions About NAP (Name, Address, Phone)

Tools like Moz Local, BrightLocal or Semrush Listing Management automatically scan hundreds of directories and show inconsistencies. Manually: Google your business name and check the first results for accuracy. Check the most important Swiss directories: local.ch, search.ch, firmen.ch, Google Business Profile.

NAP consistency is one of the most fundamental local SEO factors. It signals to Google: This business is real, trustworthy and has a clear local presence. Inconsistent NAP data confuses Google (and users) and weakens your Local Pack ranking. The effect is not enormous — but it is an easily fixable error that improves local visibility.

At minimum in the footer and on your contact page — ideally as structured data (JSON-LD LocalBusiness Schema). For businesses with multiple locations, each location should have its own page with unique NAP data. The footer address should match your Google Business Profile exactly — down to the last detail.
