AI Overviews (SGE).

AI Overviews (formerly SGE — Search Generative Experience) are AI-generated summaries that Google displays directly above search results. They synthesize information from multiple sources and fundamentally change search behavior.

AI Overviews (SGE) — Explained in Detail

AI Overviews (formerly SGE — Search Generative Experience) are AI-generated answer blocks that Google has been displaying directly above classic search results since 2024. These summaries are generated in real-time by Google's Gemini model and synthesize information from multiple web sources — including source links.

For website operators, AI Overviews represent a paradigm shift: Even those ranking at position 1 can lose traffic if the answer is already provided in the AI Overview (zero-click effect). At the same time, AI Overviews offer a new opportunity: websites cited as sources receive high-quality traffic from users who want to dive deeper.

To be cited as a source in AI Overviews, similar principles apply as with AEO and GEO: clear question-answer structures, E-E-A-T signals, structured data (FAQ schema, Article schema), fact-based content with citations, and regular updates. For Swiss companies, local expert content is particularly valuable, as AI Overviews often struggle to correctly summarize local Swiss information.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Overviews (SGE)

Potentially yes — especially for informational search queries where the answer is given directly in the AI Overview. Studies show that AI Overviews can reduce clicks on organic results by 20–40%. At the same time: those cited as sources often receive qualitatively better traffic. The strategy should be to appear as a source in AI Overviews rather than fighting against them.

Most important measures: 1) Create fact-rich content with clear answers. 2) Implement structured data (FAQ schema, Article schema). 3) Strengthen E-E-A-T (author profiles, citations). 4) Update content regularly. 5) Offer unique data or perspectives that other sources don't have — e.g., Swiss market data.

Yes. Google AI Overviews have been active in Switzerland since late 2024, initially in English and since early 2025 also in German. They don't appear for all search queries but preferentially for informational queries. Transactional and navigational search queries are less affected.
